I do enjoy my springtime visit to Wylie, Texas. This visit not only allows visits with the McKinney Woodcarving Group ; but I get to attend the Texas Woodcarvers Guild show in Grapevine ~ scheduled for next weekend.
The Mckinney "Club" is sponsored by the City of McKinney Recreation Department and meets at the Senior Recreation Center. The Center has several large meeting rooms, swimming pool, exercise room, billiards room, library, video lending library, and dining area. Classes are held in dance, painting, sewing, woodcarving and other activities. The Seniors of McKinney get all of this for the annual fee of $5.00. Since Diana and I do not reside there the fee doubles to $10.00.
The Woodcarving group is unique in that there are no dues (just annual fee above), no officers, no minutes, no membership. All of this and they average 25 in attendance each Friday morning (8:30 to noon). Most of the members are relatively new to woodcarving and concentrate in a single area depending on more advanced members for assistance. I spent most of my morning working with a novice doing a bird carving rather than my white-tail doe.
