Well,I have been planning this move for quite some time now.I will be moving from North Carolina to Billings Montana in about two weeks.I normally post under general carving section but I do not think I will be getting any carving done until I get there. There is a lot of cottonwood trees in Montana so I guess I will be giving the bark a shot.I will be bringing quite a bit of mt. laurel with me since it is my favorite to carve.Anyway,I hope to get on line very soon and maybe I can find a carving club there.Bye for now,Davy

Re: Moving to Montana
Have a good move to Mt, it is a beautiful area up that way and South of there. Check with Alex Bisso, dealer in Diamond willow and cottonwood bark and a good carver. Also, check with Clark Schreibeis a 3 or 4 time World Champion Fish carver, he is also in Billings. They are sure to be able to help you out with a carving club.
Travel safely

Re: Moving to Montana
Wow! I believe that you're gonna like the "Big Sky" and/or the "Big Wide Open" country! Spent some time there myself, mostly just passing through, but I did once spend a few days in the Red Lake area exploring the headwaters of the Missouri river. Great country!
I still hope that you miss North Carolina just a little bit and maybe we'll send you some laurel, birch, or sourwood if you run out.Have fun!

Re: Moving to Montana
Let me be the first person from Montana, here on the message board, to welcome you! There's plenty of room for another "carver" up here! Billings is quite a distance from where I live (Kalispell, MT), about 475 miles, so I don't get there very often. Good Luck and have a safe trip!Sam

Re: Moving to Montana
Thank you all for all of your nice replies.I have told a lot of people here in N.Carolina about my move and I have had not one negative remark.People think of Montana as a very cold place but my brother has been there for 15 years.Ihave told him about the snows here in the mountains and he said Montana has had a big change of climate like other states.Basically,he has said he has not experienced a bad winter in quite some time.As you get closer to the Canadian boarder I here its quite a bit colder and more wind.My wife and son are very excited to get there and I can not wait to travel Montana and all the neighboring states. Being prior Navy,I just can't get the traveling bug out of me.So with that,it is going to be a very challenging move with 3 dogs,2 cats. Thanks again and I will have two weeks before I go so I will be reading and posting when I can.
P.S.This is for my ol buddy Forest(tnartist),I will make plans to see you soon.

Re: Moving to Montana
Hey Woodtrapper:
I just spent 3 weeks in the area between Yellowstone City and Billings and yes it's starting to cool down, You will find several woodcarvers and great carving wood in that area. In all of the tourist stores I didn't locate but two stores that sold wood carved products, some chain sawing and whole lot of China made plaster immitatations of carvings. Good luck, and maybe can sell some of your real carved products (whole bunch tourists0.
Good Luck,

Re: Moving to Montana
Hey Torpidhummer, thanks for the info. on Billings.I am not to picky when it comes to found wood.I have been hearing about the diamond willow and cotton wood which is in an abundant supply out there.I will be bringing a small supply of mountain laurel with me.I probably have twenty mt. laurel walking sticks or canes that I haved carved and will be bringing with me just to show the local folks out there about this flowering bush that can be carved.Maybe there is a market there for wood carvings. Thanks
