  • Beware frozen Groundhogs!!!

Hang in there!!!....Tomorrow groundhog day....a two thousand mile storm will sweep east across the USA. Canada is below zero. If you live in the right places major ice storms coming...get those electric outage kits out and hunker down. Get your ice skates on and that poor groundhog ...going to look like a popsicle. On Wednesday, Groundhog Day, this wintry mess will stretch from the Rockies into the Plains and parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes, with heavy snow in spots. This snow, sleet, and ice will extend as far south as Oklahoma and western Texas. Rain will change to freezing rain and slicken travel in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Little Rock metro areas Wednesday night.

Airline prices have dropped big time here, LA round trip 200 dollars....but you have to go through our safe travel program or you will be sent right back home, plus we are still masked and the prices of hotels, car rentals have major gone up plus special hotel tax. Not too safe as our hospitals are still in the poop due to the pandemic, you get hurt good luck getting help.

But yea sitting in the sun is better than a deep freeze, my arthritis was bad yesterday and it is in the low 70s....I look just like that groundhog in the ice block last few days...figure with that kind of cold in the mainland. I would be a dead duck! I do remember what it feels like when you walk outside and the nose hairs ice up. Stay safe!!!!

We are on the ice side of the storm and have dug in for a few days. If power stays on we are in good shape. Looking at 12 F on Thursday and chill below zero. Hawaii certainly has some advantages.

How about hog gumbo Arthur? Or we could do a good old boil. Better than snow cones!

Well, Randy, might just be a good idea. My eldest son mentioned last week that he had some pork, from a wild hog he shot at his camp, in his freezer, and he was making sausage with it. That'll work for a traditional chicken 'n' sausage gumbo!

Not a joke how to make your own ground hog sausage and sneak it into a church pot luck.
I can't talk, we eat some pretty gross things here also...like fresh raw opihi with salted fresh seaweed.

Wonder IF that is any better than Coyote Meatloaf? Yes we have had that , one thanksgiving, we had what we called Road kill for dinner, Actually son shot the Song Dog, we got a wild turkey and a buddy got a Mountain lion/ Cougar, ( that had jumped a new calf) and the steaks were great .
                            Cheers Chuck

Back when, I was a member of the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow as an adult leader. Each year we would have a conclave where the different area lodges would get together and share stuff. One of the lodges, had as it's totem the rattlesnake. They would always bring a bunch of rattlesnake meat and cook it to share. I liked it. Since we were in San Diego County, we often camped in the winter out at the Anza-Borrego desert area. Usually while hiking, we'd spot a half dozen rattlers on the trail getting warm in the sun. Toss a couple of small rocks at them and they would usually move off the trail into the brush. Those that didn't were killed and sauteed up that evening as an appetizer. Cooked in butter with a bit of garlic powder thrown in and they were quite tasty.

Di: I'd try your opihi. Can't be too much different from raw clams, oysters, scallops, etc. For years, we have made ceviche from the raw bay scallops, and it's been great.
