Preping for Class

The carving class that I will be teaching on behalf of the Central Nebraska Wood Carvers at the local Community college is quickly approaching. Students will be make a round peg from a square one, carving simple fish pattern and finishing up with a small owl. Unfortunately their instructor skipped doing small projects and after the simple fish went straight on to larger projects, so I had never carved an owl.

Resulting in my doing something I never thought would happen. I watched and followed along with Doug Linker as he carved an owl. And will be giving him full credit for the process we follow. I also made some progressive go by’s for the students to use.

Thanks Di,..... we've been keeping our eye on this one for 4 or 5 days . I live in the extreme south western part of the province so we will be the luckiest. It looks as though Fiona will make landfall on the north eastern end of our province ( Cape Brenton Island).
I've lived all my life in a fishing village and although I wasn't a fisherman I've still learned to pay attention to the weather and be prepared. We have our own water supply, a dependable generator, wood burning stove , gas lanterns and camp stove. We did our weekly grocery shopping today and picked up a few extras just in case, so I guess we're are as prepared as we can be.
I'll just hunker down in the basement and get some carving done, and clean up any damage after this thing blows by. Others may not be so fortunate.

From growing up in New England and through conversations with my French Canadian relatives it was my understanding that you folks are fairly used to severe storms coming in off the Atlantic, in fact, isn't the tidal surge near the Gulf of St. Lawrence near 12-feet? Of course no matter we still wish you well! Just curious.

Eddy,... I got to agree with you about the media making mountains outta mole hills, and yes your relatives are correct. We do get a lot of winter storms in this area ( don't know if you could say we get used to them, but we do understand how to deal with them). Under normal conditions there is a 20 to 25 ft rise and fall of the tide every day and during a storm ( depending on wind direction) it can be quite a bit more.
I personally think the greatest problem will be when we finally do get a real hum-dinger ( and we will sooner or later) that folks won't pay attention,..... like the old fable " the little boy who cried wolf "
I'm 75 and have lived here all my life and can only remember 3 or 4 category 3+ storms, however that doesn't seem to discourage the media from trying to scare the crap out of us every year.

Nice set of "go bys", Ed! I did a similar thing at a local art guild meeting a few years back - mine was a Santa ornament. Since this was a demo and not a class, I made the "go bys" ahead of time and then carved a couple of seconds on each, then passed it along so the people could see close up what I had done. Most had no idea how a carving was made, as they were mostly painters. The last piece I passed around was the finished product, all painted and varnished.
