  • Fall hurricanes.

Hurricane is headed toward Nova Scotia. But meteorology is saying it will not be a hurricane, but one of the not everyday weather events of a hurricane...., just like Sandy it does not fit the descriptions of what a storm is. In the meteorology world is silence with a few crickets making noise, a wait-and-see event with lots of gambles of what may happen. I wish that they would say we do not know...but get ready for anything. As the cold weather hits the hurricane she will change into a winter storm, sort of a like hurricane??, but a major storm event of all things....that is not classified in the books. Tell you the truth I would not want to sit in the cold with a storm like that. Can we call it the perfect storm? who knows. But Soggy be safe, it could be nothing to something. Today weather is not predictable in spite of all supercomputers. The Dominican Republic reported that they never saw a storm like this one....., we’re in the streets with nothing, no food, no shoes, clothes, just what’s on your back. … We don’t have anything. We have God, and the hope help will come.”

Meanwhile perfect weather for a hurricane to go into the gulf, the ocean is extra hot. Right now it could go anywhere, European model has it hitting Florida, while other supercomputers throw in their gambles from Texas to Florida. Yet will not know until it gets close as to where the storm will go.

Honestly, you do not need a storm to get ready ...every facet of life today is a roller coaster of storms today, anything can happen. Prepare for the worst and will not look like those people in the Dominican Republic praying for someone to save you, when you can save yourself.

Soggy says to get in the basement and he will be carving....sounds like a good deal.

Exactly DiLeon! ,,,,, Be like a Boy Scout. Always be prepared for the worse but hope for the best. Right now the stores are emptying of water and non-perishables. It's a mad-house. My wife and I bought all our hurricane supplies back in June including water, batteries and food. **** if we want to be out with all the panic stricken nuts grabbing at the last morsels on the shelves. And yes, Soggy has the right spirit. Make sure that you have enough carving stock to last out the storm and period afterwards without electricity!

I just increased my stock of water by another 4 cases today, along with an increase in my stock of beer. Still need to get an oil change or two for my generator.

I should mention...I'm not trying to irritate Mother Nature or any of the Native American gods that control winds and storms, I'm just stocking up so I don't have to fight other people for water, etc., when the storms do come through.

        Stay safe, Wayne!

Be safe Eddy. This looks like It could be a notable storm if it lives up to their guesses. Like you and Claude I stocked up my hurricane locker a few months ago. We have been buying a few MRI like meals every 2 or 3 of months over the couple of years we have about 5 weeks worth now. With our setup we are good for a month if we have to. The longest we have been trapped in our neighborhood was about a week, Like you Eddy I want to avoid the mob of those who did not prepare. The only good thing that comes out of these things is time after when the neighborhood comes together for each other. It sad it take a hurricane for that to happen.

This is very interesting and rare... all the supercomputers agree with the path of Ian for now. Looks like Florida is the zone for this hurricane. Will know more complete information when it hits Cuba. Looks like it is headed straight to my sister's house??? can not tell her anything she quoted hurricanes do not never ever hit Jacksonville...yea we will see?

Well it's Saturday afternoon and hurricane Fiona has beat the crap out of Eastern Nova Scotia and is now proceeding to do the same to Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island ( both Atlantic Canadian Provinces). This one didn't follow the exact track as first predicted, but shifted a bit to the east as it neared landfall ( my good luck,.... not so good for those living in the other end of the province) Nova Scotia has a population of just over 1 million people, and at the moment there's just over 400,000 customers without electricity. A lot of roads have been washed out either by flooding or storm surge, but here again we here on the southwest end escaped having only received 1-1/2" of rain as compared to 6"-8" in other parts, and no noticeable storm surge.
Fortunately I haven't heard of any loss of life as a result of the storm, but it's going to be a huge financial hit to the Provincial coffers well as individual citizens who did not carry hurricane insurance.
All in all it was bad, but could of been worse

I have a friend couple on the east side from you, been worried about them. She said we are going to report throughout the night the progress of the storm. And that was the last I heard from them. Hopeful it is the normal electric down issue. I have been hearing reports of seven deaths on your island...but as you know that will change within the next days also.

Why hurricane change direction of the projected path? Little information for those who live in hurricane areas.Eyewall replacement cycles can cause the center of the circulation to drift in one direction or another. This can make it appear the hurricane is changing directions but often this shift is temporary. These shifts in direction though can cause the path to alter from what was expected. The convective storm dynamics in the eyewall can cause the center of circulation to be pulled one direction or another. On satellite, it can be noticed that the eye does seem to shift somewhat from the prevailing tendency that the eye has from time to time. Eyewall replacement cycles and storm dynamics in the eye wall play a role in this shift. Another reason for a change in hurricane track is due to changes in the steering currents which can also be difficult to forecast. The steering currents can be weak and subtle and thus any change in this steering will cause the hurricane track to change. Steering is influenced by upper-level winds associated with troughs and ridges. If the steering is weak then often the hurricane will move slowly and it can be more difficult to anticipate how the steering will influence the storm in the future. A third reason can be due to a significant strengthening or weakening of the hurricane. When the hurricane changes in intensity then this is often accompanied by some sort of path shift. Interactions with land/islands, a very warm area of sea surface temperature, and upper-level wind shear can cause the path to shifting from the previous path. All these reasons cause it to be more difficult to forecast where a hurricane will make landfall.

Never ever say that it is not going to hit me. We had one hurricane that was not supposed to hit us at all, it turned last minute and was going north, turning to the East....Cat 4 hit directly on Kauai. Destroyed that island. The worst thing everyone believed it was not going to hit, they were filming Jurassic park at that time. They had no idea until the last minute to take cover.

Again high recommend listening to meteorologist that are super knowledgeable and rather not looking into looking at her bust line on the news. smile. I recommend people like this guy so far right on about the news. Great information for everyone ....with anything can happen news.

We have many friends and family in the path of Ian. Looks like it could be a major event across the state of Florida from Fort Myers to Daytona. Most all of the west coast or Sun Coast of Florida will be effected with the right side basically raking the coast line. Not a storm to be taken lightly. We have offered our home to any of our friends that need to evacuate to the west. if your in the path make plans now do not wait. I have a friend that is a adjuster who works disaster areas. They deployed him yesterday to north Florida where they are staging men and equipment now.

Di,.... I've watched several news reports throughout the day and have not heard of any fatalities here in Nova Scotia, so hopefully your friend was unable to post because power or internet was down. What town/village does your friend live in ?
this is the most recent power outage information available.

Di,... Just watched latest news reports. No mention of any fatalities in Nova Scotia , New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island. There is a report of 2 fatalities in Newfoundland, but that is still unconfirmed.
