  • Stupidity Strikes Again.......

Yesterday, while attempting to do a repair job on one of my mutt's so called "indestructible dog toys," I tried to snip of the tip of my left pointing finger off with a pair of scissors. What really burns my butt is that I've had an excellent track record of not preforming any accidental surgery with a carving tool in years and then I go and do the dirty with a pair of scissors on something toally unrelated to carving. I won't try to turn anyone's stomach by posting a photo but take my word for it, there is now a thumbtack size flap of skin over a pretty deep hole. And of course the worst thing about it is that I'm on Coumadin so before we got the bleeding under control, the bathroom, especially the sink, looked like a crime scene. I now have a permanent finger guard on that finger. Fortunately, being the I'm left handed, and my wife is so good and had so much practice at playing nurse, I would say that as soon as the tenderness lessens I should be able to get back to carving. And for that matter, I have plenty of painting projects to complete. Lesson of the day.... don't stick your fingers where they don't belong !

Sounds like you got yourself pretty good. I hope that you heal up quickly and that your wound isn’t like a magnet until then. I’m on a blood thinner too, and hate testing out how good it works.

I have managed to avoid cutting myself (other than a couple minor nicks that a small bandaid will take care of) for the last few years, but... My arms look like I was putting them into a moving washing machine - bruises all over (the ones just under the skin that spread - I think they're called subcutaneous hematomas). I swear that every time I go through a doorway or past an open door, the doorknob or the door frame leaps out and bangs into me.

I cut my thumb off with a pair of scissors. I was pulling staples from a staple gun out of wood, the scissors slide right into the fold of my thumb cutting it clean through all but a small patch of skin. I was shocked the scissors were sharp enough to do that. I ran to the sink but changed my mind when I saw blood hitting the sink. Took the fingers into a tight ball and wrapped a towel super tight around the whole hand. In ER they told me...you cut off your thumb. I said no....I did not, it does not hurt. They said the reason it does not hurt is you cut off the nerves....needless to say, two surgeries were done. One to sew the thumb back on and later to try to save the nerves. Both were successful and the thumb healed and got movement after massive PT and half the feeling was restored. Scissors are dangerous if they touch you. they are a lot sharper than you would ever believe. PS I got Fibro which messes with my brain, The door frame.... I miss the walkway and slam right into the frame, you would think I am totally blind....one thing in life I have to deal with in life....a door frame attack.

I think Merle summed it up the other day when he commented on my clutzy accident with the barn red paint. The older we get the slower and less focused. Not much to do except just try a little harder. Of course that's not always easy. Like the engineer that went to the swamp to drain it but was up to his butt in alligators.

I hear you Claude. The other day I was sitting down to lunch and my wife said, what did you do to your arm? I had a 50-cent sized hematoma on it and don't know how it got there. Then this morning while putting away dishes I leaned down and inserted my arm in a lower cabinet to put away a cutting board and when I retrived it I took a knick out of my right arm. As for doorways. I thought that I seen the last of knocking shins, heads and elbows on doorways (hatchways) when I left the Navy. Now a days with my sense of balance being so off I'm exactly the same way as you. I never know when one is going to assualt me!

Delion..... I can just imagine the scene. I laid my left thumb open with a carving knife during one of our trips to the mountain. It was 40 miles to the nearest hospital and by the time I got seen by a doctor it was 6-hours later. The towel that my wife wrapped my hand in was totally saturated and a complete loss. Fortunately, although severe, it wasn't as bad as yours and the only thing required was to stitch it back together. Watch out for those door frames!

I ducked under this deadfall on the way down, smacked right into it on the way up. Sometimes we just have to be reminded that we're human... ;-)

I think we all had a discussion about CA glue before but I don't trust it. The time I stuck a knife in my leg as close as I could get to my femoral artery, they used CA glue and it didn't hold. Had to go back for stitches. I take it that you had better luck.
