Re: Mesa AZ Show
Hi Baldy, hey a WCI sign in sheet, how cool. Also, we can wear our WCI pins BobD is considering having made up. By the looks of the response I think it's going to happen.
Here are some images I took from the show. This was the Novice Catagory, my three blue ribbons knocked me out of the Novice catagory for next year. So I have to move up to Intermediate catagory. Yikkes! Oh on the last image the Wizard with the Blue hat is mine. The note that the judge left for me said 'if the eyes would have been even, it would have been a blue ribbon. In the second image the painted relief is mine.
Jim, sorry we didn't go on the same days, but there is always next year!
Thank you, Ash it was a fun show and a good boost for me. LOL

Re: Mesa AZ Show
Hi to all of you who make this show. I was there on Friday at the front desk when you checked in your carvings. Had the flu which was getting worse as the day wore on. I didn't make it on either Sat. or Sun. so didn't get to see or recognize anyones carvings except Nedra.
Next year I think we should have a sign in sheet for WCI members and we would at least know who we were talking to.
As a favor to me and all of those who did not get to the show. How about it, if you all put some pictures of your entries on this line and let the rest of us see them. Also let's see what the ribbon winning carvings looked like?

Re: Mesa AZ Show
Yup; the show was pretty darn good. It may not be the biggest show, but there is definitely some high quality work being shown, nice crowd and friendly vendors. I enjoyed it.
Kathy did us proud. Even though I missed seeing her in person, [I seem to have a problem with my days of the week] I recognized 3 of her pieces right away. They were very colorful reliefs of flowers, the 2 seconds and one first. Sorry I missed the other 2 blue ribbons.
I talked to Lori for a short while about her story concerning her cat, some spiders, a glue trap and trying to get the cat out of a tree with the glue trap stuck to its behind. If you are owned by cats, you know how funny this is. Anyhow, she is a nice lady.
They also had a whittling contest and I was really impressed by how much carving can be accomplished in one hour by seven guys; 4 pros, 3 regular guys but ahead of the herd. The pros were Dave Stetson, Skylar Johnson, Jon Nelson and Gil Drake the knife and tool maker. I promptly bought some more tools from Drake, hoping for a little luck to rub off; but I think a class or 2 with Dave Stetson might be more realistic to help my carving.
Lots of fun and learned a bunch, see ya next year!
Jim

Re: Mesa AZ Show
Skip & Dave:
Thank you Skip, It was a terrific experience and a wonderful show. The two images I show are only a small area of the show. It's a hugh hall with vendors on two sides and in the middle and the other half are rows of tables with the carvers work displayed. They start with the Novice Class, then the Intermediate, Best of Show, Best in Each Division and Advanced. They also had a Fine Woodworking Section. It's really neat to start at the Novice table and work you way up to Advanced. Something to strive for 'that advanced table'.
Dave, LOL, you rascal, I know if you'd been feeling better you would have had some more pins to add to that cap. Don't get sick next year, or call me I'll take your work for ya! Someone else took mine for me, and I did pick-up, worked out good. Talking As for Lori, LOL your in trouble if she see's this post. She was really tired after the show and was ready to head back to Idaho for a rest. She taught classes the same week before the show opened. She's got lots of energy forsure.
Well, Dave there is always next year!

Re: Mesa AZ Show
Thanks Kenny, it was my first Blue Ribbons! This show gives small colored enameled pins in the shape of ribbons, along with a certificate and satin ribbon...I'm sure others must do the same. Now, I have 7 pins all together (2 Reds from last years show).
Here are a few images from the 19th Desert Woodcarving Show, in Mesa, AZ.
It's a large show and hard to get the whole area, but this will give you an idea anyway.
The first image is of Lori Corbett giving a painting demo/instruction to an eager group. I can't say enough about Lori, she's a sweetheart. While I was watching her demo, they came over the intercom and announced her demo. Part of the introduction the announcer said Renowned Bird Carver, author and instructor Lori Corbett is now giving a demo in the back of the room. Lori was so funny she just rolled her eyes, as if to say 'geez did you have to say that'....So folks that is the kind of 'not into herself gal she really is' and it's that trait that is so endearing about her. It was a pleasure to meet and chat with her near the end of the show.

Re: Mesa AZ Show
Hi All, went to the Mesa Show on Sunday it really was a nice show. I was so thrilled to meet Lori Corbett what a great gal. Oh and got to meet Nedra Denison too, and Congratulations Nedra for winning awards in Woodburning.
I was very pleased I won 3 Blue Ribbons and 2 Red Ribbons for my carvings in the Novice Division. Only thing is now those 3
Blue Ribbons means I have to move up to the Indermediate Division for next years show. Sooo I have to really work hard this year to compete with those folks.
All, in all it was a wonderful show and well worth entering and visiting.
Kathy

Re: Mesa AZ Show
I went to the show today. It was my first show. And as beginning carver, I just walked around with a sense of amazement at how talented some of these guys and gals are. I was also amazed at how many people were there. Seems half the valley are carvers. I came home really inspired to keep practicing.
