Like most craftsmen, I do my carving in the garage. I mostly use a chisel and mallet and make a terrible mess. Chips fly off in every direction so I can't keep track of them. Is there a good way to keep the place clean? What do you do?

Keep your workshop clean..???????.............I've heard tell that there was people who did that, but I never thought I'd meet one ...........
If you're looking for me, you'll find me in a pile of wood chips somewhere...

Re: How do you Keep your Shop Clean?
I really like a clean shop . It is never as clean as I would like but I try . I sweep and have a vac. hooked up to my dust collection system as well . I don't mind a few chips floating around but I do like tools put away and I don't like saw dust .

Re: How do you Keep your Shop Clean?
1. Pick up broom.
2. Move broom in such way so chips get moved and pile up in one area.
3. Pick up dust pan with one hand and brush with other.
4. Sweep chips into dust pan
5. Dump chips into bucket
6. Put broom, dust pan, and brush back on wall.
And my shop isn't clean, it's "organized".

Re: How do you Keep your Shop Clean?
Having a clean shop is just like having a clean house, or having a clean desk at work, or having a clean car to drive. You must have or develop the discipline to clean it every time you use it or every time there is a mess. Once you develop a habit of cleaning and keeping something clean then it will always be the way you want it. It is difficult to cultivate good habits, but well worth the result. I carve in the living room in my recliner due to health problems with my feet and legs, so I have no difficulty in cleaning up after I carve, my life depends on it!!!

Re: How do you Keep your Shop Clean?
If I put tools away two thing would happen. One, I wouldn't remember what I have and two I wouldn't be able to find what I thought I had! As for the chips, when the cat starts thinking they are her litter and I step in it then I know it's time to sweep them up.

Re: How do you Keep your Shop Clean?
I have the most of the necessities, broom, shop vacuum, brushes, Diana even brought a Swiffer to the shop...........but, I am missing the good habit development thingy. I know it is time to get the chips off the floor when I drop a tool or a burr and have trouble finding it. I think this is what helped me get a separate building for a carving shop!
