  • Carving accident and ER...

Well I finally did it, cut my self carving,.... Santa. I knew at once this was not the normal stab... my stomach did a flip, flop, from past experience that means something bad, has happen to my body. I hit my thumb with the razor knife....take a deep breath and wait to see what damage is done? OK thats blood means the first aid kit which is next to my bench ....but I can not stop the bleeding....now I am angry. That means a trip to the stupid ER. wait this thumb is the one that almost got cut off,..( about 20 years ago from an art accident).... this could mean surgery again..... no way am I going through that trip again. One thing bad I about me, I come from a family in medicine and I do not like doctors much, especially the dumb ones. I go to the neighbor, he almost passes out from looking at blood cover bandages...I get the bleeding stop decide that I do not want the driver passing out cause he sees blood...so... I drive myself.... but first I have to go clean off the blood on santa. I call the ER that I am coming and I need stitches.....they said, "wait a second, I will have the nurse call you."... and I drive myself to ER. The nurse calls 15 minutes later....I am mad now... "I am dead," I told her, " I just bled to death!" and I hang up.
I know it is going to be one of those days, I am small frame woman, that looks like a whimp, so much so I am never taken seriously by most doctors. Because I am calm, quiet, and whimpy.." I need stitches." The RN and Doctor take a look and throw my hand in a soak bath and I sit there on the surgery table drawing santa,... doctor looks at my hand..., says its just a surface cut and the RN agrees. I am confused, and I do not understand how my stomach did a serious mistake...doc and nurse leave. In comes another doctor, ...she looks at my hand, and remarks that it is no surface wound!! and starts yelling at the nurse and the other doctor. I sit there drawing santa with a smile on my face.
The surgeon remarks there is a good chance I cut that nerve again,.... I said, "I have decided already no surgery. ... can you just sew me up so I can go home and finish santa? ... I do not care if the thumb just hangs... I will not go through surgery like that again." She laughed and I was happy,... she told off the doctor who was going to send me home with a surface cut....what idiots. What did I do? I peeled the thumb from the nail, all the way to the palm, down to the bone.
Came home and went back to carving as long as I do not use that thumb, ... I got permission from my surgeon...smile. Yea I know wear your gloves and put your carving in a vise....I know, took the glove off, to sand and decided to cut a few more slices. it was only 1/1000 of a second....
and so that is life. Di

Oh Di, OUCH!!!!!!!!! How long you been carving girl??? HMMM? Besides all the crap with the doctors and such, you should know about wearing gloves and such. You don't want to hear this right? I feel for you I really do, BUT......c'mon Di, think. One wrong slip and there will be no more santas......ever! I know it's in your blood, you were thinking of carving all the time your life was draining away. PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE, take more care. Now that the lecture is out of the way, how are you? Hi Di,

I am so happy you are okay and will be able to carve. If you don't put on your glove, be very careful.

OUCH Di, I wish you wouldn't do that to us, or you, This board is starting to sound like the ER around her. I hope it all comes out ok for you.

        God's speed, Tom

Sorry to hear abut that Di. A fraction of a second is all it takes. Sorry it had to happen to you. Take care of that thumb. Let it heal. Looking forward to pictures of those Santas.

Now that is scary! You have given added emphasis for me to wear my glove. The hospital staff were aware of my woodcarving avocation and had talked to me about safety (told them about gloves and finger guards). Then they wrote, in big letters, on my discharge papers to be careful with sharp knives! I did not take it all that seriously.............until reading your post!

I hope that there are no lasting effects from the cut and that your carving is no way impaired. That was my major concern in my last encounter with the medical community.

Ouch, I hope it heals up okay. You need that thumb for holding your work! Did something similar a few years ago carving a Santa, so I decieded to give the Santa to the ER. Finished the Santa with a cast on his leg, arm in a sling and bandage around his head, walking with a cane .... Santa Got Runover by His Reindeer! They love it and it is still there at their nurses station.

Hi Di, I think it happens to all of us each time we take our glove off and see that one cut.
                    Take care.

**** Di you're as crazy as I am. I to am an off again on again glove wearer, and I have the scars and not much feeling in my left thumb and fore finger to prove it. I have a suture kit in my carving box and have had the occasion to use it and have used super glue in the past. Just plain hard headed I guess. Seems like we all go back and pick up the carving as soon as we get home until the Adrenalin wears off and it starts throbbing. What I really hate is when I put a cut in my workbench! My big Ole Santa belly makes a perfect work bench. Give me a knife a hunk of wood and a place to sit down and I am ready to carve. Last year Anna made me an apron with a large leather front. Its really nice, the only problem is I don't wear that all the time either! Be Careful Dear. Cause as soon as the scare from this is over you like me will be back to Taking chances.

                        Hi Di,
Your story reminds me of my saying about a piece of work....it's never really finished until you bleed on it. You have taken that to a whole new level. LOL.
I'm glad you are ok, watch out for infection...... I think everyone who reads your story will cringe with sympathy pains.

JEEZ Di, What a post to read first thing in the morning. My deepest wishs on a full recovery. I think I'll wear my glove all day today, even in the kitchen. That is scary stuff. You sound a very plunky lady. Hang in there and know we are thinking of you.

Sorry Di! But you know what they say; "S___ happens", or is it "Cuts Happen"? My recent ER experience was exactly like yours. And I even started wearing the carving glove afterwards; for a few days. I'm not hard headed (well maybe), but when you carve small stuff it's hard to hold with a glove. Anyway, I know you're tough, talented, and will not let just a "surface cut slow you down". And I'm not even going to say "Wear the glove". But maybe we should..........

Take care of that wound. Sorry it happened, don't think I could have driven myself to the ER, you've got a stronger stomach than me. Take care.
