Thanks for sharing your story. I wear a carving glove with extra wrap around the thumb and I also wrap the right thumb as well. But every once in awhile I will nibble away at a carving without putting on protection. Your experience is a good reminder not to do this and I appreciate that you posted it. Also, the other day I put a tiny nick in the top of my thumb. Very minor. But I redid my thumbguard so that the top is thoroughly covered. You can never be too safe around sharp knives. I hope your wound heals quickly and fully.

GUESS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS A PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THE ER'S. WENT TO ER, SAT THERE FOR 3 HOURS WITH A FINGER CUT AND AFTER FINALLY GETTING IN I WAS TOLD IT HAD BEEN TOO LONG TO STITCH IT UP. HAVENT BEEN BACK ;o). STILL DON'T WEAR A GLOVE CAUSE IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE A CLUB ON MY HAND. HOPE YOUR CUT HEALS UP OK AND YA GOT THE STAINS OFF SANTA ;o). CARVE ON !

Well Di,you are now a woodcarver,sometimes initiations come at a cost,I know you do n't want to hear it but by now you will follow all safety instructions we have all given
all new comers. Just to let you know I dd the same thing when I first started carver, the cost was a co/cost for the doctor and five stitches.However look at the sunny side
you are ok and truly joined the official ranks of a woodcarver,now pick up you tools and come back carving. We all love you,so as Josef mentioned take it easy and wear your gloves,in my case "iron gloves all the way to my shoulders.".

Goody...I told those idiot doctors, that if had a suture kit I would have sew it myself....they get all excited oh no do not do that! but I see the need to have suture kit, plus a clotting kit on hand for emergencies.....as you never know. I think I killed the nerve this time, honestly I do not use my thumbs much any more...due to severe OA. I use my palm and pinky finger which has become very strong with usage. Dad says< " your like me....strong headed, stubborn as a mule......" I am used to severe pain, but I lost half a day carving....darn it all. smile Di

Sorry to hear of your accident Dileon, but like you said a glove is a great insurance policy,they won't stop all cuts, but it definately helps.Hope for a speedy recovery.

wow, sorry to hear about your luck.

I did that a few years ago separating frozen hamburgers. My thumb is still numb around the scar.

OUCH.....hmmmm well if u did cut the nerve, does that mean it dont hurt?hmmmmmm....my hubby hit the top of his index finger with the hammer..about middle ways of the nail (on the back side)and they sowed it back on...then the surgeon called....hurt worse after the surgery than when he did it with a hammer....just wonderin if he should have passed....

Hi Di, Well maybe it will be another 20 yrs. before you cut it again so you can relax for awhile. Ha,Ha.. You sound like a very calm person and will do fine without that thum for awhile and then back full time to making your Santas. Hope you heal quickly. Merle

I have done the same thing... as a matter of fact did it yesterday... cleaning up a piece and see the need to make one or two small cuts and grab a knife with no glove... got a small cut on my index finger to remind me to ALWAYS PUT THAT GLOVE ON!.. and I will to be sure from now on... even if it's just one small cut I need to make. Heal well and fast Di!

Di, I was squirming and taking deep breaths (something I do when I'm bleeding heavily) just reading your story. I hope you heal up with no lasting effects.
