Re: Article discussion thread:Keeping Tools Organized

The article is rather brief for a topic that has many solutions. This method of tool organization might be fine for someone who piles their tools in a box to take to a carving group, but many carvers like to store their tools on racks so that they don't have to yank plastic tubing off every time they want to use a knife or gouge. The color coding and owner's marks are good ideas.

Thanks for your feedback, Phil. This was just a top tip winner and wasn't intended to be a comprehensive article on tool storage.

Hi all, this is a simple cheap manner to store, in my case a few chip carving knives. Took an old pair of jeans that had served me well, but their time was done.
Took the back part with the pockets, cut that away from the jeans.
Cut the 'seam' from one of the legs, to use as a tie.
Folded the bottom over, and ran a stitch across to keep from unraveling.
Measured the pockets into equal segments, ran a stitch between segments to create 3 sections from each pocket.
Took the 'seam' that was removed from the leg, attached on one side as a tie.
Place items in pockets, roll the material from side without the tie, then tie the bundle up for storage.
Just a simple method that works for me.

12 - 04 - 2011 Denim Tool Roll thread in tools forum. Mine are more complicated to sew up ($5 each). However, I can now sort out the knives from the gouges from the skews, etc.

I like the tips here..My method of tool storage for my chisels is to take a piece of plywood 2 ft by 3" wide and suspend it on the wall next to where im working, kind of like a shelf, but prior to that i cut slots of different sizes into the edge facing you it. I always keep the tools i use the least in a separate holder. Short of that, Gorilla Tough makes an incredibly strong 2' magnet that holds about 18+ chisels. I've always used electrical tape to wrap around the cutting edge of the chisel when its in my tool bag, with all metal tools in it and never knicked or dented the cutting edge, ever.Hold chisel with edge up, hold tape in one hand and spin chisel a couple times wrapping the tape around the cutting edge..You can unwrap it and use the same piece of tape to cover it again. Not sure exactly why this was so effective..
