Hurricane Katrina Charity

Today on the way home from work I looked up at the exit signs to switch highways and noticed the TXDOT message board said "HURRICANE SHELTER EXIT at REUNION BLVD" This was displayed for the many busses arriving from Louisiana and Mississippi with refugees displace by the hurricane. I thought about things I could do to help. The local news is working with the Salvation Army and other charities in our area to coordinate food, clothing and shelter for these people. My wife and I decided the best way to help is to auction off a carving or two for charity. We have done this through Ebay and we invite you all to do the same.

I had the same thought today. Ebay did the same thing for 9/11, at the time I wasn't a carver, but my wife was selling on Ebay so we put several weeks worth of auctions up for their 9/11 charity, we'll be doing the same for the hurricane relief and I will be selling a few of my carving. We've also done the $$ to the Red Cross, but watching the videos on the news night after night, that just didn't seem like enough. If I wasn't recovering from back surgery, I would have gone down there to help out. God, but that's something terrible!

Firstly let me say that I think this should be switched to the General Carving thread. Mainly because most people spend most of their time there and really it isnt an off topic catagory.
Brian I think that is a great idea and thank you for that, Randy I agree I am glued to CNN I cannot believe whats happening to those poor people and even though I have made a donation to the Red Cross I just dont think it is enough. Maybe we could get an auction going here but I fear the logistics of such a thing would be almost impossible. I would willingly donate a carving or two but where would we send them and how would we handle it. I also got to thinking that so much money has been poured into East Asia that maybe we should auction off that friendship cane to raise money for the people effected by Katrina. I really dont know I am just at a loss what to do but I feel we should do something. I am much too far away to be able to go there and they are telling you not to go anyway you would only be in the way. Just my thoughts my prayers are with the all those families god bless them all.

It does not surprise me one bit to see members of this forum trying to help those in need. I have offered to take in a family who has been displaced through a re-enactment group that I am an active member of. I live in such a secluded location, that I don't know if they'll send someone here or not, but I hope I can help that way. I also have fenced pasture available for displaced horses that I have offered.
I just hope the aid gets to those poor folks who are stuck at the New Orleans convention center, before more of them die. The story just keeps getting worse and worse.

Collin, the easiest and most efficent way to auction anything for Katrina harity would be to use Ebay. It's easy to use if you've never done it before. Ebay does most of the work, you only list the item(s) and when paid for (Ebay will let you know), ship it to the lucky winner. Ebay then does the money transfer to the charity.

Just to add a quick note you have to establish the charity when you sell the item on the pricing page. You will be required to get a missionfish.org account. It is like a pay pal account only it is for the charity donations. I linked my ebay, paypal, and mission fish accounts together so when the item sells if the people pay with paypal the money goes from ebay to paypal to mission fish to the charity. In addtion Mission fish takes care of all the tax records etc and you print your receipt from them.

Additionally Ebay donates there auction fee along with your donation so Ebay is not taking a cut out of your donated item.

i like colin would donate a carving or two for auction if the money raised would go to the hurricane victims. i just dont have the time or know how to sell on e-bay. if the group wanted to get something together i would be happy to participate. also i too think the freindship cane should be auctioned for this purpose to

I was thinking about the same thing at work today. What could we do as wood carvers to help out. I will carve a santa this week end for the ebay effort. The company that I work for announced that they would match any employees donanations one for one. Got to sort out some fundraising ideas to take full advantage of this. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I was also thinking of putting a carving on EBAY for the victims of the hurricane. Whats the easiest way for doing this?

The company I work for also matches what the employees give so I made sure donated thru them also.

I also was impressed with the amount of countries offering donations. The only thing that bothered me is all of the political red tape, that is holding up there help.

it's sounds like good idea , my auctions on ebay will now give 10% of the sale
to the rsd cross . as far as getting set up go too ebay's home page and
click on hurricane and it will tell you how too sell, there is also a list
of people (red cross etc. you can choose from to donate too
