  • 2011 smoky mountain woodcarvers festival

I was just surfing around this evening and discovered that the 2011 SMOKY MOUNTAIN WOODCARVERS FESTIVAL is scheduled for the weekend of October 1 & 2 at the Heritage Center in Townsend, Tennesee. Now I knew that the Nawger Knob Craft Fair was being held at the same time as the Townsend Fall Old Timers Day over the weekend of September 23 & 24 but I did not know about the woodcarvng festival. Looks like fun!

654 miles, Dave - MapQuest says 11 hours and 11 minutes.

I am planning on being there as well! Hope to meet some new friends from the board down there! Maybe they will have a timed competition too. Bring your tools just in case!

Dave... I wouldn't depend too much on MapQuest's calculations. The mileage might be close but the times are most likely way off. That 11 hours 11 minutes Claude referenced is by catching I-575 out of Atlanta which changes into GA-5 which then gets you to TN-68, US-411 and finally US-321 into Townsend. That's the scenic route through the Cherokee national Forest at 35-45 mph. I can tell you from personal experience as my place is along the way that there's no way that route is only 11-minutes longer.

The alternate route is up I-75 all the way to US-321 to Townsend. Again, the mileage is probably close but I'd add on a bit of time as that last 38-miles is a combination of both urban (Maryville) and country. And depending on what time you hit Maryville it can get a bit congested.

Unless you've got the vacation time and want to see some really nice scenery I'd recommend the alternate route.

Alex... Townsend is in middle east Tennessee on the west side of the Smoky Mountain National Park. Nashville's in just about middle Tennessee a little over 200 miles away. It is however a straight shot on I-40.
