Dave... I wouldn't depend too much on MapQuest's calculations. The mileage might be close but the times are most likely way off. That 11 hours 11 minutes Claude referenced is by catching I-575 out of Atlanta which changes into GA-5 which then gets you to TN-68, US-411 and finally US-321 into Townsend. That's the scenic route through the Cherokee national Forest at 35-45 mph. I can tell you from personal experience as my place is along the way that there's no way that route is only 11-minutes longer.
The alternate route is up I-75 all the way to US-321 to Townsend. Again, the mileage is probably close but I'd add on a bit of time as that last 38-miles is a combination of both urban (Maryville) and country. And depending on what time you hit Maryville it can get a bit congested.
Unless you've got the vacation time and want to see some really nice scenery I'd recommend the alternate route.

No - the MapQuest numbers I gave you are taking I75 all the way up, then 321 over to Townsend. You could probably do it quicker than the 11 hours, as Mapquest has it making 55mph average speed. Depends on how many stops you need to make for gas, rest breaks, etc. on the way.
Can anyone give any more information on the festival? Will there be woodcarving supplies and related item for sale as well? I know it is a competition and sale of carved items, just wondering if anything else was offered. They did not have a website. I found some articles online written about it but they only talked about the competition Thanks. Nan
Nan... Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers is just a stones throw from the venue. If Mac doesn't have a display set up I'm sure that he'll have the store open. Gene Webb also has a store there in Townsend. He may also have a display and/or his store will be open up in Dry Valley. You can double check by emailing either one.
Just a reminder that this is coming up next weekend! Hope to see all of you down there! Made my reservations in Townsend for Friday through Sunday. Should be a great weekend of carving fun!
I am a new carver, a new member and this is my first reply. I also plan to attend and am already in the area camping in Pigon Forge. I would like to meet other carvers, board members at the show, but how to recognize???? Guess I will just wear my Smoky Mountain Woodcarver hat that Mac gave me several months ago and hope for the best. Maybe we should get badges, ribbons or wood chips for identification at events like this although maybe band aids on fingers would be most approprite

Well I had that one timed wrong, my wife and I were up in Townsend two weeks ago visiting Mac's store.
I didn't know Gene had a store in town, we visited his shop when he had it at his house several years ago, nice guy, he spent quite a bit of time with us that day.
