  • birthday today... and a great wife!

Today is my 41st birthday... and my wife surprised me with a card, and a new Veritas carver's bench!

Its the one with the cast iron legs, and top that can swivel around and also go from flat to vertical.

It should be here this week... she just ordered it a few days ago. I look forward to it!

Re: birthday today... and a great wife!

Well, I am lucky (great wife and a wonderful newborn son) but we usually dont get each other birthday presents. I was talking about getting one of these benches in the future, didnt even know she knew where to look for it.

I am sure it will be handy too, for more than just carving, in my woodworking shop. Just general work holding for any projects.

Re: birthday today... and a great wife!

The carving bench (which was shipped in 4 heavy boxes!) arrived yesterday. Took it to work this morning, and it took me about an hour to assemble it.

Wow, this thing is HEAVY! Very well made, the mechanism is much beefier than I expected and there is no way there will be any bouncing or vibrations in this bench.

I also made up a top, that fits right over the 24 by 24inch maple top - from 5/8 plywood and a solid wood edge, covered in carpet. I can pop it over the top when I want to work on sanding something, or working where I need a softer surface.

I see much potential in this thing - the hardest part was figuring where I wanted to put it in the shop, as it is heavy enough I dont want to move it often. I also screwed maple 3/4" blocks with rubber feet to the bottom of the cast iron base/legs so it work slide around on the concrete floor.

Cant wait to use it now! Here are some cellphone pics I took before I left work..

                        The bench set flat

the top raised up at about 45 degrees

and with my carpet covered top on it..
