  • Intarsia

I normally do not get into discussions but I have gotten curious if intarsia in considered wood carving. I see it often in on line carving show and chip chap magazine. I do intarsia and scroll work also.
To be honest I kind of feel it is more in the wood working classification however there is enough shaping of wood that it may be considered carving. what is the opinions of others here

    Re: Intarsia

My understanding is that intarsia is done with a scroll saw and some sanding techniques to shape pieces? I may be wrong. If shaping is done with knives or chisels I guess it could be called "carving". I guess, by todays standards, shaping with a rotary tool could be classified as "carving" IMHO. Whatever it's classified as, I admire someone who can do it.

I consider it a cousin to carving! I like to see well done intarsia work, scroll work too!

I think carving needs a 3 dimensional aspect- something intarsia and scrolling do not have. Just my opinion. I've done marqutry in the past, will do some again in the future.

            Re: Intarsia

Yesterday my best friend and I went to a little shop in town and they had some intarsia.
Some of the pieces of wood were flat and some were carved in the same picture.
Really pretty work the way the person fitted it all together.
