  • Love to build this

It’s time to make yours for spring fly fishing or perch jerking to me they are one in the same. I don’t have the time to fish now a days but I still enjoy building pirogues. If you can carve wood you can build one of the beloved bayou flat boats. For around $200 in materials and one weekend of fun work you can build your own and NOT FROM A KIT. You can buy everything you will need at Lowes or HD.

This is beautiful Don. I assume you used plywood? Wondering what kind? I could really see having one of these to go up the rivers around here. Looks like it would fit nicely in the back of a pickup.

That is something I've always had in the back of my mind I'd like to make.Kinda gets my wheels turning about even trying to make it look like a mini- viking ship or pirate ship.

Yes just plywood 1/4" you will need to laminate to get it long enough I make mine 13' long with 12" gunwales and a dead flat bottom. The gule is urethane similar to construction grade liquid nails. To laminate the plywood use a good grade of contact cement. I will glass the boat and apply 3 to 4 coats of spar let it sit in the sun for two days done.

It can be very satisfying to build your own boats. Here are a couple I've built (from Pygmy kits) - 4 mm okoume plywood, fiberglassed inside and out.

Now Don...., I know you just didn't mention the 'FF' word!! Everytime i hear that word, it drives a deep rooted insanity in me with fevor and zeal!!! Just to toss a bead head flash back caddis into a raging torrent, till it swings into the gentler current, only to feel the take, and then the lifting of the rod, and the immediate weight of the quarry in question!!!..... EH UM!!! Sorry..... I... um lost my composure there! It's just that 'FF' word drives me wild!, As in call of the wild... Which could very well mean..... WILD TROUT! EH UM!!! Once again, Sorry!!.. I can't help my self! Excellent Job Don... I wonder if in, i do make one, will they let me keep it at the reservoir here??? I'm gonna find out! Your version is way better than the aluminum john boats, all tied up against trees, at the reservoir! It's classier too!....... Thanks!

                      Re: Love to build this

I use a urethane type of adhesive very similar to Liquid Nails and Liquid Nails is fine as well. Look for the laminating of the ¼” plywood use contact cement for that. The sheets come in regular 4x8 and I need 13’-10” to build mine. Use the piano wire to hold bent plywood until the liquid nails set and in some places leave it under the glass. I twist the wire with a 16d nail like a tourniquet until the joints are snug tight. Everything I use is can be bought at Lowes to include the glass cloth and resin. I am a commercial contractor so I do get my supplies at other places now days, but when I built these years ago I got the whole of my supplies at Lowes.

Just the joints both sides get glass and the whole boat get resin. get the shape with the seat back that acts as a stiffner. You will want to keep the seat at the bottom it is very stable in the water. I use armaflex black foam insulation for the seat bottom mine at the widest part is 19"
