Re: Pretty in Pink!
I yanked them out just yesterday, the deer had even bitten through the bark on the main stems.
Expect to replace them with perennial Gaillardia daisies.
No SDOS that I've heard of yet. The mountain pine beetles have long ago killed 90(?) % of all the pine trees in BC. Here in the Interior Cedar Hemlock Zone, the Hemlock loopers (caterpillars) have killed some pretty extensive patches of both hemlock and WRC. Fortunately, the WRC doesn't degrade much when left dead & standing.

Re: Pretty in Pink!
Your welcome Brian!
Maybe your rhodies will come back from the base. We had to hack a bunch of them back to the ground to pass our fire inspection. They have all kinds of new growth now. Do have the "Sudden Death Oak Syndrome" up there yet? It will kill all kinds of trees and shrubs besides oaks.

Re: Pretty in Pink!
Thanks for the pictures of the Rhodos. The deer got all mine in the late winter. Deer spit seems to be toxic = twigs dead to the ground.

Re: Pretty in Pink!
Hi Ed,
Glad you like the pictures.
This is how it looks pretty much all year round here except for the rhodie flowers. There's hardly any native trees that loose their leaves here in the fall, so it's green year round.

Re: Pretty in Pink!
Hi Dan,
I didn't show the rest of the yard. It's still a work in progress and is kind of a mess! LOL We're getting there though.
The deer eating the rhodies is kind of a joke a round here. Rhodies are moderately toxic and deer aren't supposed to eat them because of that, but they sure munch the new growth. I guess they didn't read the books! If we didn't have the fence and the dogs, everything in the yard would be well pruned! We had to ad two more feet of fence where I have my rose garden. They pruned them very well reaching over the fence.
Glad you enjoyed the pics my friend.

Really pretty Sharon! Everything's so green! We're in drought conditions here.

Re: Pretty in Pink!
Hi Sharon,
Looks very inviting. Mother Nature and you have done a great job, the deer have a "sweet tooth" for rhodo's around here so I've given up trying to grow them, thanks for the pics my friend.

Pretty in Pink!
I haven't been on here much, work, watching grand kids, veggie gardening and yard work and not much carving is keeping me pretty busy.
The wild rhododendrons are in their pink glory right now, so thought I would bore you all with pictures of them.
These are all growing on our place. We see these out our bathroom (great view from the throne), bedroom, kitchen and living room windows.
Some of the taller ones are at least 15 feet.
Our property goes beyond the fence. It's to keep the 2 doggy girls in.
3+ acres of pretty much forest with a small canyon through the middle of it.
God and nature's landscaping. Can't beat it!
Well, I did get a shot looking down the hill at some of our hostas.LOL Have to get some of my landscaping in there too!Tags: None
