  • FWIW: I've retired and moved.

For What It's Worth: I've retired after 18 years as an engineer at NASA Headquarters and 10 more of military service early on. I miss my work and the people I work with, both! First time I haven't had a job in 46 years...

We've moved to Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Our son, DIL, and grandchildren (6 and .6) live in New Orleans, so we've settled across the lake to be somewhat nearby, but not too close. Had the pleasure last week of attending our grandson's kindergarden graduation!

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted all that much and no carvings for the last 5 months - that's because in December, my wife and I got serious about retirement. Had to do a lot of work on our town home in Virginia before we could put it on the market; also had to get rid of a lot of accumulated "stuff", and put a lot of the rest in storage so the home didn't look cluttered.

Our new home closed on the 15th, but we had to wait until this past Sunday for the movers to arrive with our stuff. Then took two solid hard days of unpacking to find things - still have about 1/4 of the boxes yet to unpack. Some stuff still missing, but hopefully in the unopened boxes. Lived in hotels from April 16 through May 21 without wanting to do grievous bodily harm to each other!

Funny note: we arrived with no knives to open the packing boxes, except my carving knives! Sacrificed (temporarily) my rough out knife - took two days until I found my box-cutter! That poor knife is probably now too dull to cut warm butter, but it'll sharpen back up (as soon as I find my stones!)

Big news today (and the reason I'm writing this) is that I finally got ATT to tell me that I had to go buy a DSL modem; for three weeks now, they've been telling me that everything I needed was in the mail (of course, I couldn't have an address for them until the house purchase closed...) Still haven't gotten the stuff in the mail that I was recently told was a "welcome" package with some cables, which I already had a plethora of... Ah, well...I now have high-speed internet again for the computer, in addition to the iPhone.

Maybe in a week we'll have the rest of the boxes unpacked and I can build a work bench to put my tools on, assuming I can find them all Then, I can resume carving.

Heck fire Claude, we bought a new home in '96, moved just after closing and still havn't opened all the boxes. What we did open up, we use, guess, if I havn't used it since 96, i don't need it huh? Well, I might one of these days.LOL
Glad you are back. BTW, This is probably the first post I have made in many months myself. Best to you and God Bless,

Claude, I noticed you weren't here much! Was wondering and hoping for the best.
So glad to hear you and your wife are on a new adventure in your lives. All the best to you both. Have fun with your grand kids.
My husband and I still have lots of unpacked stuff after three years. Even though we aren't retired yet, I'm not in a big rush any more. It's not going anywhere!

Re: FWIW: I've retired and moved.

That's two very bright things to have done:
            1. Retire
            2. Move
            Not necessarily in that order.
I have absolutely no regrets about either.
Anyway! Congratulations on your retirement. Somebody else has been yanking your chain since the moment you were borne. Now you call the shots. It's different, but there is life after work.

Re: FWIW: I've retired and moved.

Hey, Claude, congratz on the retirement. Not "working" takes a bit of adjustment, but you'll soon find you have more work to do now than you ever thought you had when you were "working"!

Don't look back. Make new friends, keep the old ones and enjoy your life with family.

                    Al

Here's wishing you a pleasant and rewarding retirement, Claude! You'll find the stuff you really need - eventually.
Coincidentally, I also retired from NASA (JPL) in 1996 after 40 years. I've had a wonderful and adventurous time since. Phil

                            Claude,
Congrats on making two very important decision - to retire from your work and to move to a new place.
It seems you scored well on each account.
The best to you, now go unpack some boxes and build your carving area.

Congratulations Claude..... you are about to find out about being "busy". Being retired is like starting a new job! Just think, you've moved to a place where you can always do what the locals do, shrimp, hunt gators or try to find wood in the swamp. You have to learn words like "choot 'em, et-too-fay, and boo-dan! Seriously, you've earned your retirement, now enjoy it and those grandkids.
