  • Whatcha Growin'?

What are you growing or plan to grow in your garden?

I think I'm just going with tomatoes and jalapeno peppers this year.

I know a lot of y'all are still dealing with cold nasty weather. Maybe this thread will get you thinking about warm sunny summer days.

    Re: Whatcha Growin'?

We haven't put n the garden for a few years due to going frequently for a few weeks several times a year to help care for first my dad, then Mom as their health failed. They are at peace now, so for the first year in what seems like forever we can do what we want with the summer. We are thinking about a small garden, but not much as we want to vacation for a change. Maybe a couple of tomatoes, some squash, and since we are true Southerners, we gotta have a bunch of Okra. Now I just need to work on the old plot...that will be a ton of work. The will is there, but after this many years, the way is a bit tougher. Hope you all have great gardening summers this year.

I started with salads, onions, peas and broad beans, but i'm late on the rest. It's raining almost every day, and it doesn't help to find some time...
I'm not in a hurry for tomatoes. Anyway, if i grow them early, they grow slower

Too early to risk big frost. In the meantime, I can watch the big pieces of snow cornice avalanche across the valley from me! Maybe in 3 weeks. Peas, green beans & carrots.
I just finished pruning all the apple trees. The grape vines are next. I will root the best 100 of the grape vine prunings and sell my garbage later this summer for 2/$5. Already 40 presold. Also want to start a flat (45) of Black Currant (Cassis) from one bush that gave me 11lbs/5kg last year.

Working on a container garden. Growing herbs and spices and a few containers of wild flowers. Putting in three tomato plants. I sure miss planting a 1/4 acre in the spring. Don't have the property any more and I doubt my body would hold up. Two P/U trucks of manure and run the tiller for two days would probably do me in now. I miss the string beans the most.

Planted some blackberry plants a month ago. Decided not to plant strawberries and tomatoes - Ponchatoula is the "strawberry capital of the world", and Creole tomatoes will be ripening soon here on lots of farms.

Our veggie garden, besides my carving and nursery businesses, is the main reason I'm not on here much.
So far we have 4 rows of potatoes- with probably 2 more rows to go from our small left over potato crop from last year, broccoli, Swiss chard, lettuce, and mustard greens in the ground. I have all kinds of small plants- assorted tomatoes, various peppers, various cucumbers, onions and cantaloupes I started from seed ready to go in the ground and in big pots (tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupes and cucumbers in the hothouse.
Almost all the tomatoes were started from seeds from our tomato crop from last year.
Also going to plant beans, peas, radishes and probably some kale and and other greens.
We have lots of strawberries coming on and ate our first ones of the year today. We have a good patch of raspberries, three different grape vines recently planted, 3 young cherry trees that look like they might bare good this year. Our young apple trees are blooming like crazy and lots of bumble bees to pollinate. We also have rhubarb, artichokes and asparagus plants.
We try to grow as much of our own food as possible. We don't use any "cides", organic man! Been composting for decades.
I am filthy dirty and barefoot and loving it! And our garden saves us **** loads of money and that's the main reason we garden besides being healthy.

I kind of gave up on gardening. Too much work and the deer eat it up before I can get to it so just put in a few flower beds, sit back, drink ice tea and watch the humming birds fight. Tried grapes a few times but they always seem to freeze out so gave up on that also. Pretty sure the deer would probably devour them anyway so just sticking with flowers.

Transplant day today. Three types of tomatoes, Three colours of Bell Peppers, Onions. Then reseed carrots. Beets are nicely up and will also seed some ornamental gourds, cucumbers, green and yellow beans, a few morning glories a little bit of corn and then try to squeeze in anything elseI have seed and space for.

                            Re: Whatcha Growin'?

Mostly flowers, some parsley, helped my son plant some blueberry bushes yesterday. Really don't have room for a garden in my small backyard so I stick mostly to containers except for Knockout roses and foundation plants like azaleas and lillies.

There's just something about spring that makes me want to plant stuff and get my hands dirty.

As the rain still don't want to stop, nothing wants to grow properly except the peas
