I know waaay off topic but since people on this forum know just about everything, does anyone have a source for the rawhide bones for dogs? My rottie goes thru two six inch bones a night and the little dog almost half of one. so every three days im buying ten at over ten bucks. a bit expensive. my wife says don't give them any but I don't want them whining all night. I am looking for some kind of bulk sales and I dotn want bones from china if I can help it.

If you would consider real bones for your dogs, you can always check out local meat butcher shops. When we had our big dogs, we always got a whole bag of them for a pretty inexpensive cost, and they lasted much longer. Just an idea.

we used to do that but with the rottie its not a great idea. occasionally I give him one and he can chew it outside. I don't let him do that inside because its a mess for one and a real bone mean like real possessiveness. not a good idea with a king Rottweiler.

Rickm, I get mine from Dog Bones | Dog Chews | WhiteDogBone.com the Borzoi and Bichons love them. OR try Bulk Rawhide Bones -Dental & More | - 1800PetSupplies.com or find a distributo for Wholesome Hide Home

Good luck and give the rotti a hug.

I used to get bison femurs for free. The Chessies really liked those and the Ravens could not fly off with them to pick into the marrow with their beaks. Eventually, one Chessie would take 'possession.' Eventually, I'd hit a bone with the lawn mower. Kinda gave up on the whole thing. They could slobber up the leather ones and bite off chokable chunks. Not.

Just my opinion but it sounds like you're givin' them too many bones. That in itself will help you cost wise. Unless you've already done so and I'm talkin through my hat you might want to discuss an alternative diet with your vet.

My large-ish boxers loved their Pig Ears, a strange form of rawhide and an ingenius way to make money off something they were throwing away. Cheaper than bones, still took them up to 30 min to devour. Past tense- one has passed and one is too old for such fare

I gave them one once and had the fight from hell on my hands. a nice leather bone is just fine. no fights, no mess.

Rickm, I'm sorry, but I don't know how many are in the 5 lb box. The Borzoi don't get more than one every two days, and the Bichons takes them about 1 week to finish off a med size bone. Don't buy the chips!!! Used to work with Vet and we had more than our share of dogs come in with blockages; seems the chips after being swallowed would spring back to partial shape..only surgery would remove impaction.

                        Re: leather bones

I recently stopped giving our schnauzer rawhide chews, even though she loves them to death. She developed some intestinal symptoms, and in the course of treatment I discovered that many, many vets discourage the use of rawhide for dogs due to the fact that it really isn't digestible and can build up enough to cause a blockage that requires surgery or can cause death if they swallow too much rawhide in a short enough period. I looked on the internet and found many articles that support this view. If your dogs actually eat the rawhide as opposed to just chewing on it, you might try to find a substitute. Nyla bones, pig ears (I believe are OK), or other toys.

I agree with all of you I do wish I could wean them off them besides being expensive there is some health risk. Not only I have questions as to manufacture and what chemicals are in them etc.
