    Re: poll for injuries

Knife fell out of my hand while sitting and carving, went to grab and pushed, yep right into my belly. About 10 stiches.

      Re: poll for injuries

I guess I've had all the usual knicks and cuts that go along with learning to carve, but have survived them all fairly well (no stitches .................yet). The injury that I fear the most is the one that might be inflicted by the wife if I come up from carving and forget to clean the chips out of my pant cuffs....
If you're looking for me, you'll find me in a pile of wood chips somewhere...

I make it a habbit of getting cut. If i don't at least nick my fingers or palm once, then i know there is something wrong... I believe the biggest violation of woodcarving safety, is rushing through a project. If we respect the time taken for safety, we would have less accidents. This is why i always explain to people about the time taken for carving. If you happen to run into a wall, for example: An intricate risky cut on a piece that requires awkward moment. You will almost certainly be risking your safety to save face on a piece. Another problem with carvers is complacency.... 'Safety is too much work. This way is much faster'... We compromise safety, so that we can get it over with. This is why patience is utterly so important!

it almost seems like we are a bit of hazardous bunch. It is interesting to perhaps note that either one gets little knicks that aren't worth mentioning or gets really involved. there is little middle ground I guess

The woodcarving gods require frequent blood sacrifices. Well known fact.

The nastiest injury I ever got while carving was from an xacto knife. Back in the mid 70s when I was living on the second floor of an apartment building, I used to sit out on the metal fire escape and carve whimseys. I had an Old Timer pocket knife and an xacto. I didn't want to lay the xacto on the metal stairs so when I wasn't using it, I put it blade up in my shirt pocket. Forgot it was there and I when I scratched my eye and brought my hand down I hooked the base of my ring finger on the xacto and sliced it lengthwise. Nice long gash that bled like a stuck pig. Duh moment.

I was sitting on the sofa carving on a small piece when my son came into the room and said, "Mom, did you know you have a large pool of blood under your foot?" I had evidently dropped one of my gouges straight down on the top of my foot and punctured a hole that was really putting out the blood. sheesh.....I didn't even feel it. I bandaged it up, cleaned up the blood, and am definately more careful where I put my tools when I'm carving (still go barefoot tho).
