  • Hawaiian Winter storm

Some people get snow, some get cold weather.....our winter storm hit last night.....today is 50 foot waves. You can see how big the wave are in the one picture that has the helicopter in it....the first in decades on the North Shore. Wind gust up to 35 miles per hour and more... I have not seen the giant waves in over 30 some years. So I pop in my little Ford and go driving ocean side to see these waves.... When I arrive at the first beach....I get blasted by sand and that hurts.... and salt water misting in air, with in minutes I am dripping in salt....beaches are major blocked off, as the wave will kill anyone who walks in their path way. The rest of drive...is going 2 to 4 miles a hour....and people are everywhere on the roads with their cameras, hanging out their cars and video taping as they drive, walking along the road taking pictures and falling into the road because they are not watching where they are going, drive normal 2 hours took over five hours....never the less it was not fun. Anyone have winter storm stories? smile Di.

We enjoy going to the Oregon coast, the waves can get pretty wild but I've never seen any like those. We've been having an unusually dry winter here. Been staying in the 20s, 30, and a few 40s but not much snow yet. It's all staying East this year. Nice not having to shovel anyway.

I got more pics.... I just found out why my car was vibrating so bad...winds clocked 54 miles an hour. Waves are going to get worst they say... but got pics of the people on the highway, there is only one road on this side of the island and it travels next to the ocean....LOOK at all those people taking pictures...and yes it was this bad. So far no people dead, no rescues.....that is a miracle. My side of the island, ....we just have wind and rain. Lost two papaya trees so far.

Holy Moly, those are big waves. I'm originally from Kansas and now living in VA. Even during the summer I don't go to the beach as the waves are more than I can take and they're real small compared to those. Stay safe and happy carving.

Which would you prefer - high waves in Hawaii or a little snow in Canada????

Bad winter HWY16 driving conditions = 13 dead this winter, 8 since Christmas.
Extreme avalanche hazard condx, but just 1 dead a few days ago.

We got a foot+ 10 days ago with a big S wind and no colder than 25F.
The wind pounds the snow into every nook and cranny, even the leak at the bottom left corner of my basement door.
Once again, I didn't get the south-facing grille on my Suburban covered up in time. Popped the hood, the engine looked like it was packed in styrofoam. Clean off all the belts & pulleys and fan stuff. The rest melts off OK.

It seems that there is no where that mother nature, does not do her power dance. Ken, actually this was just interesting to look at, I rather be here...breathing volcano dust...call vog. I post the pics...because it is another aspect of nature...but the weather here ....is warm...which is needed for my bone issues. When I left Ohio it had been -21 degrees for a month....and the roads look almost like Kens picture. They had to air lift my mom to the hospital to work as a nurse. January is always very depressing as I remember everyone starts getting grumpy.
As you can see the waves here break on the beach....lately they are eating peoples houses and swimming pools, which is why I live on a side of mountain.

We get those winds pretty regularly here in the spring and fall. Smile and get your teeth sand blasted white, If you work outside and don't flush your ears regularly the sand build up can get pretty painful. Our humidity in the spring can drop dangerously low too, as low as 4%. Real hard to stay hydrated. Monsoons, spring winds, and fall winds are our interesting times. Winter is mild most of the time and pretty boring. Summer is HOT!

Great picture Ken! Burb inside was OK.

Di: thanks for all the pictures. Just when you thought that it was safe to go near the water. . . . . . . . I can imagine that some of the the beach-front houses will get beat up badly.

I lived in one on a very long N/S lake. 18" concrete wall at the beach front edge of the lawn. Thought there must be a reason. Found out in January that it kept the worst of the waves from punching the glass front of the house.

Here in McBride, we get mountain rock dust in everything: air, rain & snow. Big winds with no snow and all the snow takes on a pale brown/gray color.

Stay safe, Di. Can you carve papaya?

Buffalo, New York- no story here. Cold, little bit of snow. Our record this year- Great Lakes are more frozen over than they have been in 20 years. Frozen lake Erie is a good thing for us, cold air over open water = huge snow. Prevailing winds carry the snow over the city. My guess is they settled here in the spring....

well I know tropic storms can be difficult but its 5 below in the windy and a 20 mph wind. I'll give you some sympathy, but not a lot.
