Since the new year I have had exactly one week where I wasn't teaching a class or a student sitting in class. I know we all need to learn and grow but I would like one weekend where I'm not grading papers or worse writing them. May cannot get here fast enough. I have four projects waiting for me to get started, and the wife has hinted about a trip to Disney....

Re: Tired of school
I felt like that when I worked on my masters. Taught every day and drove 75 miles to night classes. Then back up in the morning to drive 35 miles to work. Seriously thought I might pass myself one day! Got through it, though. You will, too.Hazel Strickland

Re: Tired of school
Three weeks down three more to go!! We are finally getting out of the classroom and doing the American Heart Association walk in Tucson. It's a spur of the moment decision so we named ourselves team No Plan. If you're in the area it's only a 5 km walk

Re: Tired of school
32 days and counting. Then I can go from 2 jobs (middle school teacher and boat storage owner) to one job (boat storage owner). Been doing this for 6 years now. Sure is getting old.
When I was getting my Masters I felt like you did except I had zero weeks off. I got Christmas day off but had a paper due the day after. That was a seriously long couple of years.
Anyone want to buy a Boat storage yard with attached "light industrial" business rentals? I could use a break.

Re: Tired of school
I really woke up, one February morning. I decided that I had done enough. Took 2 years to untangle myself from the place. Handed in my grades, handed in my keys and walked out, care free for the first time in my life. The Biology/Dendrology professor thing had come to an end after 31 years of pearl-casting. I miss the gang I worked with but that's all. Every day is a day of my own choosing, grapes & gardens in the summer, wood carving in the winter.Brian T

Re: Tired of school
Well, I still love science, research, and biology in general and always will. I don't treat academia as a job but a way of life and I like all aspects of it except the politics. I also like to see my students go on to grander things. But like any job, there are people in the workplace that can create a toxic environment and want to draw you into their miserable world. I've developed a low tolerance for self-absorbed whiners, drama queens, prima donnas, and power mongers. No matter where you work, there will always be people like that. I've reached a point where I'm tired of dealing with it. Still have 3 1/2 years though before I can walk away.Terry

Re: Tired of school
Wish I was retiring. After summer break I go back to two jobs. Before taking over my father-in-law's boat shop/storage business as well as teaching, I was well on my way to a PhD and working as an administrator or a professor. This little trip through hell put an end to that.
I envy you retired folks and your freedom. A freedom you earned, of course.
