I am in Mobile Al Di. Been through a number of storms I know the feeling. Button up and go to a shelter if there is any question that were you are will be safe.
Stay safe and good luck.
Good luck, Di! I am a south Louisiana native and resident who grew up on the beach at Pass Christian, Mississippi, and have lived through numerous hurricanes. The first one I remember was the one in 1947 (they didn't name them then) that devastated the coast. It always makes sense to expect and prepare for the worst as soon as possible, as you know, and the storm surge is unstoppable.
You're right about the public shelters. It's literally everyone for themselves, you can't depend on the government to take care of you.
Be safe, Di. You sound smart and prepared. Hold tight and update us as soon as you are able. We'll keep our fingers crossed that everything turns out milder than anticipated.
My town had a 40+ tidal surge the water topped three story buildings. You couldn't get water or fuel or clean your cloths and no ice for at least two weeks.
The real thing that kills people in hurricanes....and people think it is the wind. The storm surge, I finally got a book that explains what that is in a hurricane... it is a giant donut of water that follows the bottom of the hurricane wind direction, sort of like a whirlpool action. When that donut hits land that water can move up hill and be massive. You know I bet 99.9 percent of the people do not know that...and that is why so many drown. Here in the islands it is noted in old history book...that the surge pushed up into the valleys and they do not talk about that either. History lost.
I finally scared the neighbors into taking some action ... get the food, the water....and make sure you get food for those 8 rot/pitbulls you have next door! For the first time they all took action.
First hurricane is a fizzle unless it gains strength as it hit warm Hawaiian waters like Iniki. Second one behind it gaining strength. We are major getting ready for this one...they even have the guard setting up...that is new.
Honestly if we get hit, ....we are going to look like the Philippines. But Di has a major Disaster kit, a Tsunami, water kit, an Earthquake kit ....loaded with dried food, a tent, my gun and martial arts equipment...a military field medical bag. And my rusty trusty Mosquito nets and a wet suit. We are ready to rock and roll.
I am worried about my turtle I am carving the last six month...weird the things we think about.
Just had a look at a sat. picture and read that since '49, storms have only once been less than 10 days apart. Relieved that you are as prepared as you can be. Watch out for pirates trying to board your ship.
With the storms so close together, I wonder if and how the storm surges can or will interact?
Yip,...that is what the ninja stars are for....I am bad with them, hit them in the middle of the forehead, splits the skull in half... painless and fast. ....smile. Just joking,... I am in rare form.

Actually they think the first one will hit on Friday, and the next on Saturday night. This has become weather man dream come true.....they are happy. As this will be a first...they have no idea what they may do? Anything can happen with this....including the possible merge of the two hurricanes. We are on international news because of this. What will happen is dice toss up???....right now our emergency systems are getting ready for anything...as the systems come into our warm waters anything can happen. Right now worry is about the massive rain on the mountains causing mud slides and the works. But the only news I am getting about the second hurricane is from out of state news channels such as MSN and CNN. They are pretty scared of saying too much here....we are getting little news. They do not want to scare the tourist,....money you know. I say get them the heck off the islands! but what ever. This is weirdest freak storm system I have ever see...if your tracking it with NOAA....they have no idea either what is going happen,....other saying get ready.
Hello Di,
I saw this on the news yesterday and thought of you.....be safe. Will keep you in my thoughts. Let us know how you fare, as soon as you get power back.

I found the link to the satellite image and projected storm tracks in
theweathernetwork.com
Forgot (sorry) about the volcanoes, the ash and the probability of mud flows.
I've experienced 1.5" rain per hour for 18+ hours = really impressive. The Coast Guard
towed the Volkswagens ashore than had floated out into the bay!
I guess that anything is accurate at handshaking distance. I suppose that one thing that you can't buy in the islands is Bear Spray (aka Pepper Spray). . . . . the bears smell it and know that it means people (soft on the outside, crunchy in the middle) and people food.
Wasp spray it is ....have a bunches of it. Give it all my friends and tell to get rid of the pepper spray....as it very bad about coming back into people faces because of the wind factor. The wasp spray shoot long distance making it good.....yea bear spray and pepper spray is illegal here.
