  • trout stream coffee table

it might have been back in the 80's I was reading a wonderfull article with photos of a carver having done a deep deep relief carving of a "looking down into a trout stream" glass on top coffee table. the twigs, leaves, logs, fish ,rocks and all the other expected clutter was all hand carved. He got over $1000 for his carvings back then, each one hand made . I believe I read maybe in the same article, that later on he had helpers roughly gouging it out and he would finish the detail work. or maybe he sold the patent to a mass producer even later on yet.
On a road trip going through Wall Drug we stopped in one of the several shops and lo and behold, there I saw the (one of them) coffee tables. thinking it was about $1600 by then.
faulty memory lets me thinking this table top was about 4 inches deep to get a better effect.
Does anybody else remember this ? or has anyone here carved a similar coffee table?

yup, that sure does look like it, or very similar. I tried googling him by name and cant find any articles type website. I see now they are doing lamp tables of the same theme.
      thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link, I was thinking about doing a coffee table with a flower design relief...but wonder how it would look. I like the the design work ... as it goes in and out of the table....something to ponder on.

Funny you should ask. I did a file cabinet a couple of years ago and have been working on a similar coffee table for some time now (see pics). A Google search will give you quite a number of photos for this and similar designs. I've attached a couple of the most notable. This has turned into a long (but enjoyable) project. Let us see the pics when you are finished.

looking at the table top of your photo, wondering if the wood border top surface could be carved a bit to resemble the water surface ripples and currents?

We have one those coffee table at our fishing clubs. I think it's one of the reproductions, but I'll take a closer look next time I'm there. If you want close-up photos, I could take some. Mike

                    Re: trout stream coffee table

I make the base/sides in a glue-up and planned to hide the sides under a frame. the water surface would then be the glass. I would think that the side stiles could then be carved as water but this may be a bit difficult to clean in the future. Anything is possible.

The link below is to the file cabinet I did a few years ago. It may be of some help
