I got my new statement from Social Security, and my cost of living raise for 2015 is...drum-roll.....$36 a month. Wow, am I going to be able to live high on the hog next year!. That is, if you discount the fact that my share of our health insurance went up nearly $300 a month, hamburger meat is closing in on $5 a pound, utilities are going up 6%, and so on. I sure am glad the government is looking out for me with these annual cost of living adjustments.

Re: Social Security raise
I agree with what most of you are saying...........but just think how would you be getting along if you had nothing coming in like some of the less fortunate countries in this old world. Sure I would love to be getting more than is being provided, but with careful planning and living a modest lifestyle we are able to live comfortably and right now that's all that I need.
I was going to say ..." I buy all my luxuries with my carving money; but I guess that would be stretching it.......
If you're looking for me, you'll find me in a pile of wood chips somewhere...

Re: Social Security raise
Although I understand what you are saying, I get Social Security also, another major employer in our area is closing up shop. There are many families right here that are losing their income. Some families have both parents working there and BOOM, it is gone. Many have decades working there. Sure, there is unemployment insurance for a while, but that is not going to be the same as a regular paycheck.
I have a lot of friends who are still working and they haven't gotten any raises at all in years, not just COLA but any raise at all.
Sure, I would like to get more of a COLA in my monthly check, but I can't really complain about what I've got.

Re: Social Security raise
I am hoping SS is still around 14 years from now when I consider retiring. Right now, full retirement age for me is 67, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will inch higher as more of the baby boomers reach that age.
I have been fortunate enough early on to understand that SS might not be around so I have been saving so it is not my sole source of retirement income.
When you see what the US government spends money on foolishly and what is wasted by fraud, the pittance they dole out in COLA adjustments are a joke.
