  • Arrested? What!

I got a good kick today,....someone came to take a picture of the wood carving of the sea turtle and coral reef system I am carving. He pointed out, "Do you know you could be arrested for this?" I said, "Why would I be arrested?" He said ....for taking coral out of Hawaii waters. I remarked....that is not coral that is Hala driftwood carved to look like coral, that piece took over two/three months to carve. Then I got to thinking what if some idiot called the authorities that I had a giant piece of coral sitting in my living room....and the cops showed up? This is not the first time people thought it was real coral.....that would be kicker I get arrested for carving something that looks real and try to prove it is wood....and that .....it is carved!!!

    Re: Arrested? What!

That would be funny! I sold a carving of a snake a few years back that looked pretty real. It was a staff with a snake twined around it and sticking out a bit. I took it to a UPS store for them to pack and ship it and a customer waiting in line asked if it was a real snake that I had wrapped around the stick! One of the things I love about carving wood is how it can be made to look like so many things and really fool the eyes.

If you weren't way over there in HI I would love to come visit you in jail! Maybe I could sneak in one of my new files so you can escape.

I'd be proud to be arrested for something like that. Can you imagine the courtroom scene?

I can call the authorities for you if you like......

Wait till you carve Ivory and have to declare at border.. lol Better have a 'Cites" which is short for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
That would be an even bigger nightmare.

LOOK OUT FER THAT WOMAN!!!!!! SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!!!!!!
(and she knows how to use it.)
Very deceptive realism in that coral. Pattern, size, everything. I think that the other thing that your coral and reef fish carving provides is a far more believable environment for the turtle itself.

Apparently, there is an annual conference and competition for people who tie fishing flies. One Brit made the news when everything he brought was confiscated by USCustoms = importing insects into the USA. He had to arrange to provide microscopes to make his case for artificials!
