  • Testing how to post pictures

The new forum has confused me a bit with how it does pictures. It seems to do it several ways, but I always liked the little thumbnail views that gave you some idea of what each picture was. Or you could copy and paste it in the body of the thread for a larger size. I've tried uploading to Flickr and attaching as a url with this new site but have had little success. So I decided to experiment a bit and see how the different options work with this new site.

First, I'm going to use the method I have used before with the old site, by scrolling down the page and using the "Manage Attachments" button. You can also find it if you do an "Advanced Reply". You get the normal window to select up to 5 attachments and then upload them.

Re: Testing how to post pictures

It kinda has them neatly arranged but doesn't show the thumbnails. Let's try using a different method! I clicked on the insert image button in the reply box.

IMG_0597.jpg This one was from my computer and you select and upload the pictures one at a time. It shows up as a thumbnail when I insert it!

397125.jpgThis one is from my weebly site, pasted as a url and it also shows up as a thumbnail.

This one was also from Insert Image buttom, url, but it was just referenced back and not downloaded to WCI. When you paste in the url location, it has to reference and actual jpg, bmp, or whatever file. I couldn't get it to work with Flickr yet.

Hmm, so even though they showed up when I was writing the reply, it just shows a link to pictures that were uploaded? The only that you don't have to click on to see is the last. Let's try that again with one of the other pictures.

Re: Testing how to post pictures

When linking an image from an external host, it seems that you need to uncheck the box
"Retrieve remote file and reference locally"
I've been doing this and linking Photobucket hosted images successfully like this.

If I don't uncheck that box it does this.

Re: Testing how to post pictures

Not a lot of control over size, but at least I can see pictures without clicking on them. Trying this one from facebook.

Re: Testing how to post pictures

Well, I haven't reached a conclusion about how I want to post pictures, but at least I have figured out how to make them appear, even though they are huge. I wish the first method worked like it used to, but perhaps they are still working on that. Not sure that Flickr is going to be useful for me.

To adjust the size of an image that is linked from an external site, you need to adjust the image size of the hosted image.

Re: Testing how to post pictures

Thanks for the beta testing, guys.
In post #1 I'm seeing the thumbnails.
In post #2, I see links for the first two photos, and the entire photo for the third photo.
In post #3, I see the photo.
In post #4, I see the first photo, and a link for the second image.
In post #5, I see the link.
In post #6, I see the thumbnail for the attachment
In post #7, I see the photo
In post #8, I see the attached thumbnail.

Let me go in and "rebuild" the thumbnails and we'll see if the thumbnails are visible for everyone.

Mike, what is different about the first method on the new site from the old site. I might be able to adjust the settings...

Re: Testing how to post pictures

This is what I see int the first post:

That seems to be how it shows up for any photos that are somehow uploaded to the forum. The ones linked by url to other websites show fine. But the great thing about uploading them to WCI ist that the photos are saved with the posts, no matter what happens to other websites or accounts or whatever. If I delete the pictures from my weebly account, then they won't appear on the forum.
