My friens, the departure of Brian (Adios) coincided with my visit to the Mt. Home Woodcarving Show and a visit with Donna Thomas. I mentioned my Snow Owl post on WCI. Her sad comment was, At Least You Can ! I can not. Since she can not post I will try and post for her in General Woodcarving
I have been thinking about the whole situation and decided to at least make some attempt at finding out what is happening. I posted the following in a letter to Fox Chapel Publishing.
Fox Chapel Publishing and the subsidiary Woodcarving Illustrated owes the thousands of current and former members a clarification. It should be published in their magazine ─ not in the form of a post on the Woodcarving Illustrated Forum! A few minutes ago the Forum listed 2 members and 65 guests on the site. Three years ago these numbers would have been at least double digits for members and the high triple digits for guests.
This site inadvertently encouraged online friendships with other woodcarvers. I became friends with a handful of carvers that I will never meet in person. But, I chat with them on a regular basis via skype, facebook, or email. It is a sad commentary on the state of the Forum than not a single one of these go there on a regular basis, some almost never post, and some have dropped themselves from membership (no formal way of saying I am no longer a member). This note is in response to another member saying, I Quit! This individual had posted over 7,000 times!
I will hang in here until the bitter end; with the hope that Fox Chapel really does intend to repair the site and return it to its former usefulness in the woodcarving world. The truly sad thing is that it has not been replaced. It is a retreating shadow, but still of great value to woodcarvers.
There is a void waiting to be filled. There are other lists but none are even closely comparable to WCI. I see only minimal economic value to an online forum such as WCI. There is the question of whether anything like it will ever happen again. It could just become a fond memory among those of us who dedicated our time to assist the forum and help other woodcarvers ─ especially those new to this wonderful hobby.
For the many of us who value the forum and support Fox Chapel ─ through subscriptions and recommending their books to others ─ we need to know that the dying forum is not a waste of our time.
I believe that there should be a simple statement, placed in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine indicating ─ Fox Chapel is absolutely dedicated to restoring the Woodcarving Illustrated Forum to a functioning site.
