Not strictly off topic but here goes. I was wandering round our local flea market today and there\'s a guy selling his woodcarving gouges! They seem a good mix of Marples and Sorby and he was offering them at the bargain price of £7 each or 3 for £20.

So what\'s the catch? I don\'t know what I\'m buying !

Hopefully he\'ll have some left when I know what I need and what\'s what

I have had very good experience with older woodcarving tools such as Marples. They are excellent high carbon steel and take a fine edge. My present go-to gouge is a Herring Bros fishtail. This - in preference to many modern Swiss & German tools that I have.

My only advice would be to buy sweeps (shapes) you are likely to use.

My first gouges 15 yrs ago were made by Sorby. Definitely held an edge. I found they worked better with a mallet rather than pushing by hand, due to the bevel.
