  • The Complete Marriage

    I was giving advice to a friend and decided to post it here also.

    From a man who has been married 35 years, here are the secrets to a long happy marriage.

    For a happy marriage;
    Apologize. (It is better to be happy than right)

    For a long marriage;
    Never arrive home unexpected, call first.

    To keep things running smooth;
    Take her to dinner once a week.

    For a peaceful marriage;
    Listen carefully when she is talking at you.

    For a satisfying marriage,
    Help with the dinner dishes.

    If these don't work, you married the wrong one.
    Rick

        May 7th was our 35th anniversary.

        That's hard to imagine since I'm only 37 years old.
        Well -- at least I LOOK like I'm 37.
        Honest.

            Good advice. I would add one more bit; always get up first to make the coffee.

            27 years now, and looking forward to the next 27 (at least)

              41 yrs. May 1st......and I won't claim ANY of the credit. Karen has to be the most tolerant soul I've EVER run into!

              Oh, except I have learned to say "Yes, Dear" in a most contrite, manner.

                Oh Rick, how obvious your list was written by a man....check out number five...."For a peaceful marriage;
                Listen carefully when she is talking at you."

                For the sake of peace, I would think you should refer to it that we are talking TO you, not AT you! Hmmmmm! Deborah

                  Freudian slip perhaps Deborah?

                  Or just maybe, since I was giving this advice to a male friend, it was appropo?

                  You may feel validated since Theresa made the same comment when she read it.

                    Re: The Complete Marriage

                    Diana and I will be celebrating our 39th anniversary on June 20th. Not bad for a couple that met in March, started dating in April and married in June. We were both at Grand Canyon for the basic training for rangers.

                    Twenty years later we learned that when we announced our intentions, our friends started a betting pool on "how long it will last" and the longest anyone would go for was Christmas. They had to return everyone's money.

                    A few weeks ago a group of friends were gathered and one of them started relating a story from my peace corps days that showed one of the foolish episodes of my life ending with the comment..."and that's only one thing he pulled!"

                    "How in the world have you put up with him for all these years?, Diana was asked." I am not sure exactly how to take the answer of, "Well, the one thing I can say for certain is that it has not been boring."

                        June 7 will be 49 years for me and my child bride....amazing since she looks to be about 39!
                        We had a 70th anniversary party recently for a couple and I asked him to tell what made their marriage last so long. He said "It's very simple. Just say only three things when confronted by the soulmate on anything.....Yes Mam, No Mam & I love you. Never say more, never say less."
