How are our message board members from Florida doing in the wake of those tornados. I'm praying all are well, but if you are from that area, please check in and let us know you are allright.
Hello, we are ok in our little part of the mid gulf coast. The really bad stuff split and went around us, then reformed a solid line and really tore the state up from there on in. Got up for work this morning to the news of devastation and rescue workers trying to search for people in the dark before the sun came up.....
The bad stuff hit while everyone was tucked snug in their beds.....which is why it's a good idea to have one of those little radios that sounds an alarm when tornado warnings are put up. If you are asleep when all this is going on, it could be very bad. I haven't heard how high the death count is yet but one is too many....
susieq
Susieq,
Glad it missed you! Our property is up in the panhandle, but our Son and his Family live below this mess.
I never heard of the radio you mention, in 12 years of living in Florida (just moved to Tennessee). where do you find such a thing? I'll get one for my Son.
Wade
Wade, you can find those weather alert radios at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Sears, most electronics shops and a lot of catalogs. L. L. Bean, Campmore, Cabella's, sharper Image, etc.
Hi Wade, AlArchie and Nancy G beat me to the answer but yes they are a very good thing to have. You program it for your area and it picks up a radio signal from NOA weather when ever an alert is issued for that area and sounds off.
ps, Tenn, that is where I want to move to....and soon.
susieq
thanks, everyone, for the info, I'll stop by Radio Shack and check them out.
Susieq, where in Tennessee are you thinking? We love it here and the cost of living is so much less than Florida! If you want to look online at properties check out www.realtor.com , it's one of my favorite sites, though I've just about quit looking at it since finding our place!
Wade
Weather radios are super but the best thing on this thread is knowing that Susie is OK. That FL weather was AWFUL and it's truly a blessing that she's fine.
Do we have any other FL members that anyone knows of? 1,000 thanks to Al for starting this thread.
Hey Susieq, this part of Tennessee isn't bad either. We are up close to the Tennessee/Virginia line and you can't beat it. The cost of living is low, the people are nice, we have all 4 seasons, plenty to do and see, and lots of woodcarving.
Glad to hear everyone is okay in Florida! My Father-in-law was in Gainsville last night through it all and is supposed to arrive back in Tennessee tonight. I bet he wished he left one day sooner!
Thanks everyone, for the good wishes. We were lucky, many were not.
My husband and I have been talking about moving to Tenn in a year or so. Selling out here. My folks live in NC near Murphy. It would be nice to live closer to them than we do now and I would love to live in the foothills, not the mountains. Of course, Blake forgot to mention that Bristol is home to the short track in Nascar and two of the more exciting races during the season....wooohooo! Motorcycle
We won't leave here as long as Mike's mom is living. Next Saturday is her 95th birthday.....
Actually this past October we rode all over Alcoa, TN area, looking for property with our friends from Chicago. They have been wanting to get out of the bad weather and high taxes for a while now and liked that area. But property had sky rocketed in the TN/NC area in the last few years and there is no cheap land available anymore...... Big developers are buying up all the large farms and other tracts of land and putting in high end housing. Kind of like what happened here years ago.
Bristol is nice. I liked the area. Four seasons and a pretty landscape, a nice small town someplace. Sounds good to me. Wade, what part of TN are you in?
susieq
I'm South of Nashville near Lawrenceburg, Davey Crockett country.
A lot of my neighbors are Amish, horse and buggy, no electricity. Really great neighbors with great senses of humor!
You can still find land around here for under $3,000 an acre. I recently saw 39 acres with a 4 year old home, a small barn and a 4 acre pond, sell for $150,000! If it had been closer to me I might have tried to buy it, but it was 25 miles away.
Check out www.realtor.com I think you'll like it!
Have a good evening!
Wade
if you are looking in the alcoa,tn area there is a member of the caricature carvers of america there by the name of gary falin and they also have some good clubs close by also.
Glad to hear you're all okay, I hope all our friends are and pray for all those who aren't!
We tried one of those weather alert radios a couple years ago and it wouldn't work were we are. Too mountainy we were told.
I bought hubby one of those crank up emergency radios for Christmas, it works terrific and he loves it. It has weather alert on it too, it has a lot of stuff, even recharges your cell phone. They do come up with great stuff, don't they?! Deborah
