    Re: Pop Up's

Alice, it could be many different factors that is taking so long, If you are on dialup,it depends of the speed of your modem, line etc, DSL, faster, cable faster yet. The speed of your Computer is another factor. If it is an older ones the Megahertz come in to play, The higher the faster processing.

      Re: Pop Up's

Charlotte, the Internet Options is listed under "tools" drop down menu when you are in your internet browser....look at the little tool bar across the top, above the row where the "back" button is....above that. See "file, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools? Click on Tools, click on Internet Options and look in there.

The other thing is Norton is an Anti Virus program. It doesn't guard against Spy ware....nasty little "cookies" , programs that certain websites plant on your computer when you visit them. These little programs do all sorts of things, like record where you go on the internet, your preferences and so on, for marketing purposes. They also allow popups to appear on your screen. There are several programs you can download for free and a couple of good subscription programs too. I currently run 3 anti spyware programs on my computer because I find that what one might miss, one of the other programs will catch and eliminate.

The two free programs I use are Spybot and Adaware, both available on the interenet. I recently bought Spy Sweeper and run it too. This has nothing to do with Antivirus program which you also need.

Regarding Norton, I used to swear by it, used it for years. But the last time I upgraded, I bought the new program instead of renewing my old one on line.

The new program was a system hog. It used way too much of the memory on my computer and it ran like a slug. I un installed it and sent it back to the company with a nasty letter, asking for a refund....which I got. I have since heard other complaints on Norton also. Our internet provider had a couple of programs he recomended to customers for Anti virus and I use one of those now.

Your problem really sounds like a spyware problem though....... I think you can probably get rid of the popups if you get rid of the nasty little program or cookie that was planted on your computer during your travels. Good luck.

        Re: Pop Up's

Look around and download Mozilla Firefox. Excellent browser, much better than IE, less prone to security threats and malware, and has pop-up blocker built in.

Norton - while pretty decent - was always a system hog. I got away from them before their latest release, but some people I know are not happy with it.

AVG is excellent, even the free version. Runs in the background, you won't even notice it until it wants to update its virus files.

Adaware and Spybot are 2 more to use to keep all sorts of other nasties away.

LOL - Susieq and I have never talked about this but it sound like we have all those identical programs, except I have Trend Micro PC-cillin as the main anti-virus program. And I do have Norton Ghost which does nothing except save everything in case of big breakdown.

Hi Nancy C. I tried it again .. After Control Panel I get .." Pick a Category." no Internet Options.. Maybe it's because I have a Compaq computer.. Shouldn't have gotten it.. I guess. I am going to try and delete this Norton's but I will wait until I get the new software as I don't want to be left with nothing for a few days.. I think this old brain is FRIED ! Head Bange grin.. Re: Pop Up's

Go to Grisoft and get the free AVG before you get rid of Norton....I dumped Norton after getting a bunch of virus' and didn't get the AVG right off so had problems....I also have Mozilla....IE takes so much space, it alone slowed down everything, not counting the attacks on my computer.....geez, sometimes doesn't seem worth it does it lol

Charlotte, in your last post you said you were going to "delete Norton", DO NOT DELETE. Make sure you do an "uninstall", big difference!

Okay. If you go to "Control Panel" in the upper left you will see a box that says Control Panel and in that box "switch to Classic View". Click that then you will get all the stuff, Internet Options included. Nothing wrong with your computer just that we sometimes set up our "views' differently. Yours is set to the Catahory view. One click like I said above and you will change it. computers are enough to make anyone bang their head

You can also go to all programs , go to accessories then go to system tools then system restore . Then setup a restore to before the pop-ups started .

                          Re: Pop Up's

I had Norton and had ad-ware problems with it too. Now I have Nod32 and no problems in over a year. I also have the Google Search Bar installed, I use a lot of features of it, but one of the most useful one is indeed the pop-up blocker.
