  • eagle down....

    Hello all,
A few years ago one of our neighbors (who has about 5 acres in the middle of town) let a cell phone company put up a tower on his property. It is probably about 500 feet from our house and we were not thrilled about it but we figured we would probably never be hit by lightning again with a lightning rod like that close by.....

Well, shortly after the tower was completed, a pair of bald eagles found it and began nesting there. I was amazed as I was under the impression that they didn't use man made structures to nest in....but there they were, no mistake. They even beat the local ospreys to it. That was also a surprise because around here osprey nests are everywhere, on telephone poles and everything else.

We watched the nest, my husband bought me a highpowerd telescope at a yard sale and I keep it set up just inside our back door. All I have to do is step out the door with the tripod and aim it at the nest. cool. The eagles had been having two babies a year for the last 3 years. Then they leave for the summer. It's that time of year again....the babies arrive in Dec or January and by this time they are fully feathered and flapping their wings up there.

This past Tuesday morning, (my day off so I was sleeping in) my husband came and got me up, saying "you better come look at this". I'm thinking, "ok, the dog did something in the house and I will have to clean it up" but hubby led me through the house to a room whose window looked out on the south side of our back yard.....there sitting on the ground, looking really ticked at the world was a huge baby eagle! The thing had to measure 24 inches tall sitting there less than 6 ft from me. So, the first flight did not go well....

We are so lucky that our 85 lb boxer did not go around the house when he went out to potty that morning....or we would have been on our way to the vet clinic to get him patched up. This bird would have been more than a match for our big dog and it would have been ugly.

After taking a few pics through the window, I called the wild life folks and they said they would be out in about an hour or so. Meanwhile the big bird strutted around our back yard like he owned the place. He hopped up on my bonsai display shelves which are about 4 1/2 feet tall and he didn't appear to be injured in any way. The wild life folks arrived to size up the situation and after seeing where the nest was it was decided that the parents (who would normally look after the chick until it could fly) would probably not come into our yard to feed it. I suggested just taking the chick (it seems so ridiculous to call something that large a "chick") back over to the field below the tower to let the parents do their thing but the lady from wild life rescue thought it would be better to take the eagle back to her place and make sure it wasn't injured, see if it would feed, and then they would release it or take it to the bird of prey rehab in Altimonte Springs. She did promise to let me know what happened but I haven't heard anymore about it.....
So, that was our excitement for the week.

    Re: eagle down....

Ain't it great when something like that happens? Gives you a chance to study the critter up close and personal, no binocs or 'scopes required. Woohoo!

I think it is only that eagles are slow to adapt. There's been an eagle nest on a pole of some sort at one of the local marinas for a bunch of years. The lot owners were thinking of knocking the nest down 'because it would create a mess', but they were told off right smartly, and they left it alone.

      Re: eagle down....

That’s a great story susieq. I can’t compete with eagles but… The building where I carve is an old brick built construction about 12’x12’; originally used as a place where they did the laundry (circa 1910, called an out-house) I knew there was a family of wrens nesting up in the rafters, the parents were getting through the gap under the door. They ignored me completely, brave little critters.
One day while I was whittling away, the little birds – about five of them if I remember – dropped out of the nest and began fluttering around me, their first time out of the nest; it was like something out of a Walt Disney film! They bounced of my shoulder and shot out through the open door and into the garden, never to be seen again. It was quite a moving moment I don’t mind admitting.
If I hadn’t been carving I would never had seen such a sight, there’s a moral there somewhere I suppose.

Suzie .. What a wonderful story ....By the way .. since mentioning that .. Down here on the coast of Texas about 30 miles from my house .. A pair of bald eagles have built a nest in a tree just off a main road .. now to see bald eagles down here is a miracle .. and you ought to see the media attention it's getting .. There are so many people stopping on the side of the road taking pictures .. The county had to post a policeman on the road just to keep traffic moving and in order ... I wish I could post you a picture .. but I dont have one at the moment .. It's unbelievable the amount of people coming from all over to see these beautiful birds ... I guess even in Texas .. God's allows us to see his beautiful creations ..
            Thanks for sharing the story

You are one lucky lady, to have that honour of an Eagle family next door! Thank you for sharing it with us.

                Re: eagle down....

Susie... Excellent story. Also living in Florida we too see eagles and osprey making nests in the most unlikely places. It's really amazing how resilient nature can be. The more natural habitant that humans destroy the more resourceful birds and animals become.

                  Re: eagle down....

I have always been tickled to death that they moved in on the tower....the ospreys were sizing it up but they waited too long.... You should have heard the complaining on the part of the ospreys when the eagles took over the tower.

The eagle babies are solid brown when they feather out. They don't get their white feathers until they are about 4 years old. I think it makes life trecherous for the juvenile eagles because they are not recognized as baldies for a long time..

I loved your outhouse story, Brit......it sounded like a charming magical moment.

There is a lot of wild life in our area. The little swamp at the end of the road used to have a family of otters living there when we first built our house. This is right in the middle of town, mind you. But they have not been seen in years. There are large egrets that spend lots of time hunting and wading in there....a king fisher that hangs out on the phone lines over the swamp, waiting for a minnow to surface.

There are also aligator snapping turtles living in there. That is one critter I try not to mess with. I will always pull off the road and help a turtle cross the road, or if it's a busy road, take the turtle to a new location. One day, I turned off the highway onto our road and here walking down the middle of my lane (like he owned the road...that should have been my first clue) was a big turtle....dinner plate size or larger. I pulled over and ran up behind it and grabbed it with both hands on the back of the shell. Now all that follows here happened in the blink of eye....as I bent down and grabbed him up, I realized that he had a spiked tail and alarm bells started going off in my head. I knew what it was right then but it was too late. In the same instant, this HUGE UGLY Head came whipping around, jaws wide open and I heaved him into the water filled ditch on the side of the road.....along with uttering some "French" I also told the beast he was on his own. He darn near got my hand.

We did get some shots of the young eagle with our digital camera so I may try to post some pics on here later on.

                    Re: eagle down....picture...I hope

Ok, here goes my first attempt to post a picture. If it works, this is a photo of the eagle chick that was down in our yard a couple of weeks ago....sitting in front of our huge old pecan tree. The pictures are not very good, my window is dirty for starter and for some reason, the eagle looks smaller in the pictures than he really was. That tree is about 4 feet in diameter and is over one hudred years old.
