  • New Member. Hello all.

    Hello All,

I just joined this forum and am working on getting my feet. It's a bit hard to navigate.
Anyway, thank you for having me.

I have a question and I'm not sure where to post it so I'm going to post it here in the hope you can advise me further.

I'm starting a new project and I need to find a source for a blank to carve.
It needs to be 2 to 3 inches in diameter and 4 feet long - it's a walking staff.

I'm located in Ontario Canada and so far all I've been able to find online is the dowels they sell at home depot.

    Thank you in advance,
    Dalziel.

Welcome and nice to have another stick maker here. There are several Canadian carvers here that might be able to help with wood sources and I'm only familiar with US suppliers.

Sometimes I'll just use a closet pole from the local hardware store...pine/fir. Regardless, glad to have you onboard.

Welcome Dalziel, nice to see another Canadian carver aboard. For your needs, check out your local building supply center, a 2"x 2" piec of Maple or Oak should be available, or buy two 1' x 2" boards and glue them together. I suggest carving the top separate and attaching it when carved. I usually drill a hole in each and cement them together using a dowel as a joiner. Works for me. Feel free to ask questions as the need arises, a wealth of experience here for the asking.

Hello and welcome to the forum. If you click on the dark strip at the top of the page that says FAQ it will take you to the WCI homepage. Click on (“How To “). You will find a lot of help getting started including a section with 14 pages of patterns and tutorials. There is a great group of carvers here on the forum that are willing to help however the can. Here are 3 Places where you can get 2" dowels in a variety of woods but they are expensive. https://www.westwindhardwood.com/product/other/dowels/ in BC Canada. In the states, Bell Forest ( special order) and Braid Brothers.
I have used Baseball bat blankes for canes they are mostly 37 to 38 " long ash or maple wood. I have rounder off 4”X 4” Lumber using a hand plane If your plane is sharp it is not that much of a job.
