  • My Attempt a making a Wren

This is from the Spring Issue of WCI . The Article is by Randy Conner . Bird is Basswood and Base is Cherry from my Barber . Doing a Bird was on my Bucket List , with the Help of Randy Conner it's no longer on my List. I now can say I made Bird Feet, it took 3 Pair to finally get a decent pair. The Base is a Knot sticking out on the Cherry Piece , Just Wacked it off and it seemed to work , got some Pretty Grain. Alot of Close work , hard on these Old Peppers . Acrylic Paint and Poly U.and Antiqued it with Watco Dark Wax. Merle 1-PICT0001.JPG2-PICT0003.JPG3-PICT0004.JPG4-PICT0005.JPG5-PICT0006.JPG

I would say your attempt at making a wren was a great success, Merle. I think it looks terrific. The carving work and painting are both very good. By the way...it's nice that you still go to a barber. I gave up needing a barber many moons ago!

Hi Bob, I did some Stoning and Power Shaping , that is what I wanted to try and Reason for this project. The Feet where a Trip in itself , I found by Drilling 5 holes in a Board as a Fixture to hold the Wire so I could Solder the Feet was the Key to my Successful Feet making . Great Learning Experience. The Barber doesn't have to take off much , but the Trip is Good for my Ego . Ha,Ha. Thanks Bob for your Nice Words. Merle

Hi Joe, I got a lot from the Video on U Tube . I didn't know how they Attached the Bird to the Base and it showed and made sense . I guess you are never to Old to learn but hard to Remember. Ha,Ha. I didn't know I was going to use for a Base till I got the Cherry Pieces from the Barber , perfect timing . Thanks Joe for your Encouraging Words. Merle

He came out great Merle. Nice that you got the feet figured out. Now you have to start counting feathers, and barbs to make sure they are correct.
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

That's a pretty darned nice looking little bird Merle. You've nailed that natural little pose and I think the kickers look spot on as well. Two thumbs up.

Hi Tom, Counting Feathers and other Parts ie Way Outside my Box . On this Bird I counted 2 Feet and that's as High as I can go. Ha,Ha. I did 1 and that's enough for now. My Daughter saw it and said , " now do 7 more " that covers Daughters and Grand Daughters " , and she got a big NOPE. Thanks Tom for Showing your Interest. Merle
