  • Parental Love...

This little carving stands about 5 inches tall, carved from basswood, painted with acrylics. Based on a photo from Getty Images/China Span RM. Because of the black paint, it is difficult to see, but the cub has his right front leg reaching out over top of the mother panda's arms and he's leaning forward slightly, as if trying to get away and explore!

Well done and a cute piece of work, Claude. I saw a panda pattern in the latest WCI magazine and my wife wanted one. I just might even make it better and hi-jack your idea. Nice fellows you did.

                  Thanks, all!

Bill: I just did an internet search for "panda" and then clicked Images. Hundreds of great photos. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to sell this one, as the photo was copyrighted. I asked for permission to use it as an inspiration for a small 3D wood carving, but haven't heard back yet. If they want me to get a license, I'll just say the heck with it and keep my carving for personal use.

Actually, I did a search using the data you mentioned and came up with pages of stunning Panda photographs...but none with the one holding a cub. However, your idea is what I liked even if sparked by a picture. In the search for the exact photograph, I learned a few things...brown Pandas, for instance. Never knew and neither did my wife.

However, all those pictures were adorable and glad to see such an effort to move them away from extinction. Cute guys...especially those new cubs.
