I always do a drawing, an anatomy drawing and an illustration search on the internet for size and position. For example, if I was doing the bear, I would have a drawing like this next to me....copy from the internet. Just a suggestion of how to get good size and shape portions of animals and etc.... Your carving is really cute. tumblr_o088yeHldJ1v2b0h2o5_250.jpg

          Alaska? Isn't that "grandpa?"
          If so , it's a polar bear/black bear hybrid.
If so, he stands 6'6" at the shoulders. I would come up to about his ear.
If so, he stands more than 13' tall when he stands up.

The shape of the head appears to me to be more like a black/brown bear than a polar bear, especially the area between the nose and the top of the head. Polar bears have a much more streamlined face...(left two drawings in Dileon's drawing...)

Hybrids don't get to pick and choose which parental characters they will display. Same as human kids.
"Grandpa's" DNA tagged him as a hybrid.

Agreed, the bridge of the nose and the forehead makes the different bear species look quite different from each other.
