  • Narwhal carving process

This week i started a Narwhal carving.
The wood i use is lime wood.
I use a dremel as a powercarving tool.
To cut and put the rough shape i use a bandsaw.
I enlarged a picture from a book to the right size i wanted. From end to end is is 30cm long.
The tusk is made of chinese chopsticks.
It is not finished yet. I want to make two more. So a total of thee. I have not decided if a am making only males or that i carve a set of a male narwhal with tusk and a mother and calf without tusk.

    Any ideas ?

I will keep you informed of the progress.

Coming right along, assuming the pod will be displayed together should be very nice.

Hey Ed, I want to make a pod of three narwhals and put them in a single display. Just as you indicated. Thanks for your reply.

Your carvings are going to finish out well. You seem to take your time in laying out your project, take as much time removing the wood, speaking for myself, I have a tendency of hurry hurry hurry when slow produces a better result.

Hi Joe, Patience ........ That's a good tip. I also sometimes notice that I want to quickly. Then you remove just too much. Especially with a power tool!

Here's an update on my Narwhal carving. Had a small setback last week. I dropped it, this broke the tail in half. I removed the tail, attached a new piece with wood glue to the rest of the tail piece. I remade it from a scrap piece of wood that I had lying around, so there is color difference in the tail section. Unfortunately it is not quite right as I planned but I am satisfied with it. I also attached the pectoral fins and made details on the top of the back. Also made some muscle definitions which makes for a more lively whole. I have no idea when I will post something about the update of the mother and her young who can join daddy in an unknown time.

Coming along very nicely, I like the movement to tail, and I really like the eyes, they really draw attention.

I hope the eyes will still be visible when fully painted. Because narwhals have a patchy white, Grey and black skin tone. To make them stand out i mostely paint them with a gloss Color while the rest is painted in a dull Color.

                              Hi Claude,
I was really fed up when it broke. but the great thing about wood is that you can often repair it. At first I doubted whether it was strong enough. But it stays together well.
