Owl Carving

I found the pattern for this owl in a book I received for Christmas. I am a beginning carver and just learning. My posts before were things I had carved with power tools. I had not hand carved because I have had some extensive surgery on my hands. I also got some new carving tools and decided to try hand carving only. It was an enjoyable experience but made my hands a bit sore. I think in the future I will be trying to use both power and hand carving.

The owl was carved from basswood.

That lQQks pretty darn good for your first try after your surgery, I hope your healing will be quick and hands pain go away. How did you get the shine and color on the Owl?

I had surgery on my hands some time ago. Esse, the wrist joint had worn out due to Pseudo Gout. I had surgery called four corner fusion on both wrists done by an extremely good hand surgeon at Rush Orthopedics in Chicago.

The owl was finished first with Danish Oil and then spray can Lacquer. The color is due, I think, to the lighting where I took pictures.

Nice job Poplar. Perhaps using the power tools for roughing out and hands for carving the detail might help take the load off the hands a bit and leave the use of the hands for where you really need it on the detail. Just a thought.

Where there is a will there is a way, is just a matter of finding out what works best for you. Happy carving, look forward to seeing your next piece.

Great job on the owl. Its not about the tools is about the fun of doing it. I have had to go to both power and hand tools. With old hands and arthritis. I stop when it hurts and come back to later. I think slowing it down has helped my work.
