"Sal" (my first carving)

This is a little guy I whittled out of a 1"x1"x3" piece of what Lowe's call basswood. Been studying wood caricature books and vids for a while and finally decided to jump in. I'm pretty pleased but there's one paint spot that I'd like to fix.

My four year old daughter named him Sal. I've caught the bug and now really need to get some actual carving basswood.

Great carving Sean, I can assure you my first one was no where near that quality. Now about that bug, .... as far as we know there is no known cure for it and if they ever do find a cure I hope they keep it quiet.....

Certainly a nice "first" carving and you should be proud. make sure you label it as such and it will become a great bench mark.

Hey thanks for the kind words and warm welcome, all. I learned a lot during the process and am itching to get carving on another one. My kids really want me to make them some ballerinas. Told em you gotta learn to crawl before you can sprint! They had no idea what I was talking about

Wow, Sean, that's an excellent carving...especially for your first one! Nice detail and good painting. You definitely show promise to be a good wood carver. Here's a tip on where to get high quality basswood: Call Heinecke Wood Products in Cumberland, Wisconsin (715-822-3524). They will cut pretty much any size and amount you need and ship it right to your door. A 1" x 1" x 12" piece is about $1.25 (if my failing memory is correct). They are very nice people to deal with and the basswood is the best you can buy anywhere...you will be pleasantly surprised! Definitely stay away from that stuff they sell in Lowe's!

Thanks again for all the encouraging words. I'm sitting here at work looking at pictures of flat plane carvings trying to get an idea for #2. You people are gonna get me fired!
