  • "Pickin' and Grinning"

This is from a Dwayne Gosnell rough out I started at the October Renegade. Dwayne was lucky enough to have our group the very first day, but he held up well despite our commentary and modifications to his designs! Kevin Applegate was of the opinion that it would be wasteful if something wasn't made of the slender piece of wood supporting the banjo when this rough out was machined, and being easily led astray, I came up with this. My first thought, being from Arkansas, was a possum sitting on a fence post, playing a harmonica. But I decided that the market for possums was probably limited and changed it to a cute bunny. Everybody loves bunnies, right? Dwayne is a very prolific carver and it was a lot of fun being in his class. And it was both challenging and fun to work on these guys! Thanks for looking!

Mike that's a great carving! I always admire your creations and am a fan of the way you paint "plaid" shirts, but I think I like this fellows shirt even more. I'm going to have to try that on one of mine soon.
            thanks for sharing,

As usual Mike you've got another winner here. I'm sure gonna have to go some to get half as good as you. I'd say the detail on the shirt is more along the lines of a pin stripe than a plaid but maybe I missed something. He sure looks pretty rapt 'cause it looks like there's more pickin' than grinnin' with this feller. (I think you should have gone with the possum. Just sayin'.)
