  • Viking Bottle Stopper

Just finished this one for a customer. The stopper is just over 3 inches tall. The silicone cork is recessed into the bottom about 3/4 inch so the silicone is not visible when placed on a bottle. Carved from basswood with acrylic paints. Adapted from a Gary Falin pattern

I'll drink to that one Claude. Nice job.
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

The silicon stoppers I get from Woodcraft. They need a 1/2 inch dowel 7/8 inch long for the silicon. I normally drill a 1.5 inch deep 1/2 inch diameter hole into the base of the stopper, using a brad-point bit in my drill press before I carve the stopper. After that hole, I then put a 1.25 inch Forstner bit on the drill press, center it on the previous hole, and drill 3/4 inch down with the Forstner bit. If you add up the numbers, you'll see that my 1.5 inch dowel is just a bit short... That's ok...when I glue in the dowel (after carving the stopper), I put the silicon stopper on the dowel, then put glue in the hole (Elmer's white glue), and insert the dowel and silicon. The "short" dowel leaves just enough room at the end of the hole for the glue.
