  • "Old China Hand!"

There's a well known Navy themed painting by Frank Zuccarelli, “Old Salt of the Sixth Fleet,1972. It's one of my favorites. The back story is also very interesting. It disapeared from the Pentagon in 1998 but was recovered by the Government in 2009. I assume some high-ranking Naval Officer figured that he needed it more than the Government did.

I decided that I'd try to do a replica using a "goose egg." I'm naming mine "Old China Hand." if you could roll up his sleeves you'd see some fantastic "Tattoo" work!

Great Work Eddy, he sure looks like the 'old salty Boatswain Mate', that
introduced me to Mess Cooking aboard ship!

In this Navy carving, there is nary a leg.
Just a poor sailor who looks like an egg.

He's a great carving. He's big and robust.
He may have a temper, but he doesn't combust.

He looks on the sea as an old long-lost friend.
One of the things on which his living depends.

And when he returns home from a voyage afar.
He has a few beers at the neighborhood bar.

Rod! You're a poet and apparently you know it! Thanks for taking the time to compose this little ditty! I intend to save it.
