  • Man with pipe

This guy is from a 3 1/2 x 4 x 6" block. The pipe is a separate piece. I thought about making it all one piece by either resting the pipe on his chest or holding it in his hand but decided it was too much work.

Excellent carving, Joe! You could take a cotton ball and pull a few short fibers from it, then glue them into the pipe bowl to make "smoke"

The flesh paint over the carving is what I might expect.
The nose reminds me of a character living here in the village.

The lack of symmetry in the shirt collar and under shirt is so real.
I sat on the edge of the bed this morning to button my shirt,
stood up and I looked just as lop-sided as him!

Great face in this fella Joe, his eyes really grab ya. I like it.
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Fine work, Joe, and really an attractive piece...those eyes really accent it fine.

I'm in the camp about the eyes, lots of detail around the lids, & the painting and shading really top it off!

Really nice, leaves me wondering what he is contemplating.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I had trouble getting this guy to look the way I wanted. So after fussing with him quite a bit I gave up and said "good enough". So I'm glad you all think he's ok.

Beautiful work, Joe. I call that “noodling a piece to death” and agree sometimes it’s best to stop or risk ruining it!
