  • Hiking buddies...

After doing a claustrophobia-inducing coal miner and a photographer from the gritty urban streets, I thought it was time to head to the great outdoors again...

Nah. Actually, I'd been in touch with an old friend who told me he and his son had done their first backpacking trip together this past summer, so I figured I'd send him a little hiker. Nothing special, but I kinda liked it, so I made another for myself. ;-)

Nice! I like the map. He doesn't want to get lost.

FWIW, these are the photos before flipping/adding the whittles. A view of Temple Mountain in Utah, and my daughter descending the Gray's Peak trail in Colorado (boy, that one was a long time ago!).

Very nice presentation. Would you care to share the process?

I literally just set a scrap of wood and a rock on my keyboard, then take a photo with my phone... ;-)

I actually really enjoy messing with photos sometimes. With the right ones.

There's usually some cropping and shadow/highlight correction after I send the pictures to my computer, but I don't know to do any more, it's just the photo stuff that came on it.

What I really don't understand is why the auto settings on a basic I Phone are better for whittle pictures than my 'real' cameras...

Thanks! I've tried that with a camera and a flip phone and haven't been able to duplicate your success.

Great presentation and great little hikers. I’ve thought about carving a small “ traveling gnome” to photograph when I’m out on motorcycle rides this summer.

Will and Bjorn are off on a hike.
They prefer walking, to riding their bikes,

They don't go that often; for fear of losing their way.
Their map is quite helpful; although the weather's a bit gray.

Bjorn has a stick, to help with the walk.
Will has no need; he's a bit of a jock.

I hope they get home, before it gets dark.
The mountains can be dangerous; they're no walk in the park.

Soon they are back, four hours have passed.
They jump in their car and step on the gas.

The presentation and photography are excellent, as are the carvings. The map is a great addition!

                    Well done!
