  • Will There Be More Or Is this It?

A couple of weeks ago I started carving a martial arts figure for a good friend of mine. He owns a pizza shop and the last time that my wife and I stopped by it to see him our meal was on the house. I had to do something to repay his kindness, thus the karate man in more or less his likeness. I was his primary instructor as a Yondan when he stated at the karate school. I've been retired from active practice for over 15-years and he now outranks me as a Godan. We have a good relationship because of our shared experience and I received a very nice email today thanking me for the gift.

So what does this have to do with "Is this it?" Over the last week I've been so under the weather with Vertigo that I hardly had the energy to finish the carving. I'm sure that I'm not the only carver who has had to deal with the dizzyness, headaches, sweating, nausea and vomiting that vertigo brings on by it is terribly dipbilitating, stressful and depressing. I would so like to be able to sit down like a normal person and carve something else but it isn't going to happen until I get a handle on this thing.

I was hopitalized last December with an attack, went through a complete workup, and got five good months free from it until 5-days ago. I'm almost sure it's from my ears as I have severe hearing lost, extremely loud tinittus of varing tones, and changing pitch of conversation. Almost all women sound like Minne Mouse!

Anyway, if anyone has some experience with it and would like to share I'd love to here your story.

Eddy, I like your carving. I get the vertigo thing once in awhile too. I found help on line, read about the little bones in the ear canal that float to the wrong section and causes dizziness. Sounds weird, but it seems to be true. The fix is pretty simple. Lay face down, stay that way a few seconds, rotate a quarter turn (your whole body) and wait in that position a few seconds, then rotate another quarter turn and repeat until you are back in the face down position. If done properly you can actually feel the little bones move. It works for me, hope it does for you. Also, have your iron checked. My son has been having the noise/voice thing change and he found out he is low in iron. He has tinnitus also. Taking iron is helping his weird sounds.

Eddy, Hang in there. I suffered from a condition called cochlear hydrops. I would get pressure in one or both ears and loud ringing. When these symptoms would begin to act up and just as they were clearing up, I would suffer from severe dizziness. The only treatment I was given was a diuretic that helped with the most severe symptoms a little bit. This came and went with no rhyme nor reason for nearly three years in my mid 30s and then seemed to resolve on its own. I thank God that I have not had any signs of it for nearly 20 years now. I understand what you're going through to some extent as there is no worse feeling than sitting still and feeling like the room was spinning. At it's worst, it was debilitating.

I will remember you in my prayers and just leave you with my best wishes for relief.

                Really neat carving!

My wife had a spell last summer, I was surprised to find how common it is in varying degrees. The clinic even had preprinted sheets with PT exercises (which did the trick for her, thankfully). I did not imagine they saw folks for it so often. Good luck getting it sorted.

Sappy! Thanks my friend! Will try it the next time I get an attack. I have a full blood work up appointment at the VA tomorrow morning so I should be able to tell from it whether I'm anemic or not. Great suggestions and the very reason that I posted a personal medical problem on the forum.

Thanks Tim.... This problem that I have has presented itself in two forms. One is just dizzyness to the point of nausea and worse. The other is that the room spins around and around and I have to keep my eyes closed to keep from getting sick. I woke up around 0500 the other morning with the room literally spinning. It was so bad that I couldn't get the clock focused and had to get my wife to tell me the time..

Nice Carving, Phyllis has had some vertigo, not as severe as yours though. It sounds pretty scary I will keep you in my prayers.

Woody.... Fortunately YouTube has a number of videos on exercises that can be done sitting and laying down. I'm already trying to use them, plus I've eliminated caffiene, choclate, and radically reduced my salt intake. Due to health reasons I've already had to alter my diet two or three times over my life span so changing something another time is no big deal.

Morrow.... You wouldn't have that P.T. sheet still laying around the house and care to share it would you?

First of all, very nice of you to send your friend the Karate man carving! Good memories for both of you…and pizza!
I don’t get vertigo, but I do get sinus infections with the symptoms you’ve mentioned. I have gotten some relief using nasal irrigation, or “netti pot.” Basically, rinsing the sinuses with warm water that has a mix of sea salt and baking soda in it. Afterwards, I’ll make a hot tea and hold the tea in my mouth to help things warm up and relax more.
Another thing that I’ve tried recently is massaging behind my ears, in front of my ears, the back of my neck and down the sides of my neck, and gently pumping just above the collar bone at the base of your neck. The idea is to push, or pump fluid down away from your head from your eustachian tubes and lymph nodes. It only takes a few minutes, and I repeat several times. It helps drain my sinuses and eustachian tubes and relieve the headaches and dizziness. There’s a video on YouTube where a lady explains/demonstrates this technique.
Praying for relief for you Eddy…
