  • "Praying Cowboy" from Renegade 2014

I've been asked several times by customers about adding a little diversity to my carvings, particularly Santas. So when I saw this P.J. Driscoll rough out at the Renegade, I figured it might help improve my carvings a bit. PJ is an excellent instructor and I am pleased with how this turned out. He has a certain dignity about him (the carving, not PJ). I added the beaded hat band after admiring the beadwork on many of Gary Falin's carvings. Thanks for looking!

    Mike,

I always enjoy your carvings, but this one is just great. I am really glad that you added this diversity one of my favorites.

    Safe Carving and God Bless,

This is amazing to me. I don't know how you can carve a figure with so many deferent expressions. Mine all look the same not matter what I do. Mike this one is super. Job well done. Ginny

Ginny, it's all in the little details, but I think some of mine look the same too! Mine has a vague resemblance to the ones that PJ carved; I especially like one he did that had a similar head to mine, but his wasn't bald...he had "hat hair"! I'm going to remember that! I'm hoping Eric will post his, cause I know it will be good. It was really interesting having so many people in the group carving this rough out and seeing how each one was different.

oh yeah, and it probably helps that I'm using rough outs with the instructor sitting down at the end of the table!

Very good Mike. Can you share any tips on the how you did the dark skin tone?

PJ said he used burnt umber, which I don't have. So I used washes of Asphaltum (a type of brown) until it seemed the right shade. I used pink for the lips and edges of the hands.

Nice work, Mike! I love the look of the pants - faded, blotched, and folds all over! The hair looks great also!
