I've wanted to carve a bulldog ever since we got Otis. He's pretty interesting with his wrinkles, his smile, the way he sits. This is more of a caricature, but I like some realism in my caricatures, maybe too much at times. I like the way he looks, but I think I'm probably going to use him in a scene or a group. I think I may have him looking up at a guy eating a hamburger or something? I need to think about it some more! Thanks for looking!

Re: Bulldog
Fantastic job on Otis; the painting, the posture you got it all! And that expression on his face says " If I don't get a bite of that hamburger I'm gonna cry"...
Thanks for sharing

Re: Bulldog
He looks great Mike. Do you make a pattern on a piece like this (single view or 2 sided view) or just use a piece of wood the appropriate size and start whittling? I like the way you did the fur. It looks just like I would expect it to look. Good job! Lar

Re: Bulldog
I made a clay model (Supersculpey), baked that, and used it to make a pattern that I cut out on my band saw. Then I use that blank and my clay model to make my own rough out, which I then carve. I use a duplicator I made to rough it out, and get rid of most of the waste. Then I use the clay model as my reference to carve it. My process gets it close, but as with most rough outs, there is still a lot of carving to do. You have to leave a lot of extra wood so that you can carve off all the marks from the bit. The difference is that it is all my design instead of someone else's.
Here is a link to my clay model for this carving: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...7252958&type=3'If it wasn't for caffeine, I wouldn't have any personality at all!"
